Subject: strange goings on (just don't panic!!!)

vince3 ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2007 at 7:45 AM · edited Sun, 22 December 2024 at 8:52 PM

hello todays topic is a curious one to me, i don't want to start a big paranioa thread(that's not how you spell paranioa is it?) but just wondered if anyone else here has noticed someone going through their gallery recently and adding loads of their images to this persons favourites, personally they added 38 of my 63 images to their favs but i don't qualify as one of their fave artists (kinda curious)

Now when i look at what else they have favourited it seems that they hit one persons gallery and then added all the images they like from that persons gallery to their favs, then move on to another artists gallery, so you get 20 of one artists and then 20 of anothers and so on, now maybe its just me but it just comes across as weird to do this as i could never imagine myself doing this, so just asking if anyone else thinks this is strange behaviour or i'm just being paranoid. (by the way they have no gallery here)

anyway i won't name names, basically if you were affected by this member you would of had about 20 ebots or so saying they added you to their fave images, but if a Moderator wants to have a look and see whats going on then i will pass on their homepage to that moderator.

sorry to interupt the scheduled programs with this but it was a bit of a head-scratcher to me.

Why not site mail the person and ask?

ok! but i don't think i will get a reply as they haven't added any comments to any of the pictures they have favourited, just collected loads of pictures. there seems to be a lot of members here that don't have galleries but just collect images, guess i don't understand the concept of collecting other members pictures.

lets say you had 50 images in your gallery Karen and someone added 40 of those images to their favourites in one day but didn't add you to their fave artists list (thus not being notified of your future posts) would that not appear strange behaviour to you, i'll understand if you can't answer that as a Moderator, but would appreciate an answer if you can, i just can't understand it as if i were looking in the galleries and found someones gallery i liked most of their pictures i wouldn't add each image to my favs i would just add the artist to my list and check out there gallery at some time and maybe pick one or two faves from there.( by the way if i were to ever add someone or someones image to my faves then i would always of written a reason why, either why i liked the gallery or why i like the image, i would always add a comment to the gallery aswell if comments were activated (unlike mine at mo))

anyway i'll send site mail and see what if anything is the reply.

sorry if that hurt anyones eyeballs but i seem to of forgotten paragraphs AGAIN!!!

KarenJ ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2007 at 9:00 AM

Yeah I understand what you're saying, Vince. It could just be that the person doesn't know about the fave artist feature though!

I'm guessing your concern is that they may be "harvesting" images for use in tubing/tagging without permission? Obviously if we got any proof of that we would take appropriate action. But as it stands, they're not doing anything wrong...

There are thousands and thousands of images here at R. Now either you download what you like and end up with a few DVD's, or you keep thousands of favourite links in your browser.
A third option is to use R. to create your personal "gallery" of works you like. What's the problem?

Paranoia. That's how you spell it.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

Oh is THAT what the Art Charts is? A measuring of how many people have favourited your pic?

I guess I won't have to worry about that...

I average receiving 10 favorites a year...;) I just downloa pictures I like. In about 6 years (was a lurker for awhile), I've probably downloaded about 15,000+..;) yes..I should get a life..;)

If you're worried about people making 'tubes' out of pictures, one thing I seem to remember is that people like that prefer a white background, so that's one thing to avoid.

Thanks for the feedback guys!! and for the compliment Lucifer (though i am re-reading it looking for the gag! LOL!)

as far as i am aware it shouldn't affect the art charts at all as it is just one fave per image, i would hate it if it did though as im not a fan of the charts.

i'm trying not to be weird about it, but i guess it is just very alien to me, as i upload here, i have site-mail chats here, and goof about in the forums with you guys. so the fact that there are some silent members here that do none of these things but just collect pictures in stealth mode ( 89 pages BTW) i just don't get it. I'm not exactly Mr extravert in real life, but i don't seem to have any problem talking to anyone in these forums, so i just don't get the silent side, Lurking or collecting.

Anyway nuff grumbling, and more inuendo from me.

that's interesting Pakled, as you are definately a big contributor to these forums, i've never downloaded a picture from here, except those that were dedicated to me, like to keep those as a reminder. i've only been online since 2005 but i have never lurked for some reason, just can't stop yapping really. I know i don't really know anyone here or at other sites but it never occured to me to lurk, just seems easy to talk to people here.

thefixer ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2007 at 11:35 AM

Haha Vince, it DOES influence the charts because it's the amount of images in any given week that have been favourited, so if you have 69 [just a random number]  images in your gallery and the same week someone makes all them a favourite, you'll be right up there fella!!!

It could just be a person who admires your pictures and is either  a total newbie, shy, or not fluent enough in English to feel comfortable commenting here.

Sorry to inform you all, but  your talent level here is a bit intimidating when one first joins. I know that when I did, I was too scared to comment or post for months. Didn't want to make a fool of myself in front of artists I respected. So I just puddled around. The very definition of a lurker :blushing:

BTW, When did we get Art Charts?

DarkEdge ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2007 at 2:55 PM

well i do share your feeling of something being a little odd, vince.

but really, once you put them up for viewing what can you really do to protect yourself? watermarks, scripts (on personal websites) that don't allow for "saving as".

the web is a beautifully great thing in that it allows you to interact with so many peps, but there is always the dark side...
