Subject: Is It Too Soon To Start Using Poser 7?

zonkerman ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2007 at 10:46 PM · edited Thu, 26 December 2024 at 12:22 AM

I still have Poser 6 and primarily use DAZ's V3 and M3 characters.  I've been seeing a lot of comments in this forum about problems with Poser 7 and the new V4 so I'm wondering if the product has too many bugs for someone like me to use for now.

Can anyone whos uses V3, M3, and Poser 6 who bought Poser 7 provide their comments on how the product is working for them here?  Do you wish you did not buy until later?  Or are you happy with it and able to keep moving forward as you did when you had Poser 6?  I want to avoid buying it and then having to shelve it because of bugs and have to wait for patches to use it.

Poser 7 has been working fine with all the version 3 characters from Daz.

Only problem with V4, is turn off the external morphs and you should be fine.  V4 just has an insane number of magnets on her, which is the problem.  Not Poser 7.

I've been thinking about upgrading to Poser7, especially to play with depth of field.  But with all the complaints I've been reading I can hold off until SR1 or a bit more.  No rush really.

Poser 6 already incorporates depth of field, so no need to upgrade for this alone.

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards...checkmate!

No problems here with P7 working with mil figures including V4. It renders faster with better lighting and I find it quite stable for the first go round. I have noticed that many of the complaints are user faults and not the software. Not all, but many are. The turn off external morphs was a problem in P6 too, IIRC, so nothing new there.

I only have P6 installed for testing and python scripts that have not been updated yet. I open P7 first.

Now there is the P7 Carrara issues. Looks like there won't be a P7 update in Carrara so P6 is need for that, but if you use Vue6 nothing to worry about, once the kinks are ironed out. I heard the SR1 is to be sometime in Feb.

The only advice I would give is don't let the few complaints stop you from buying P7 if you really want it. There will alway be someone that will complain that the problem is Poser and not them.
You know the old story, The cat died and it's that crapy software Poser's fault because I forgot to feed the cat, thingy.

I'm fine with Poser 7 and V4 and V4morphs++

I think P7 is much more stable than P6 was on release, the only bug i'm getting is it won't let me do 2 cloth simulations in the same scene, other than for that i haven't used P6 since P7 was released.....V4 works fine too,.......Steve

Poser 7 works good for me as well, despite the occasional rare crash, the longer pause when it can't find a texture and you tell it to stop looking, and that the cloth room seems to actually be slower than in P6.

Oh, and all your jpeg images are saved at the lowest quality, which is another PITA.

Wyrmmaster's V3 Millenium Dynamic Deformers are still volatile.  They turn her into silly putty!

They work fine for me... Maybe you should download the latest version?

I wrote Wymmaster about this.  He has'nt mentioned a new version, and I did'nt notice any release numbers.  Can you tell which you are using, when did you DL?

I wonder how I'd make a MOR.pz2 of my current settings?

If you have very large Runtimes (mine are around 20gig~40gig each) P7 crashes when allowed to "build library" - tech support says they are working on that, work around is to navigate folder by folder, one at a time and if it asks to rebuilt then click Cancel (save often!)

alpha channels are lost when rendering over image or shaders - tech support is working on that, there are a couple workarounds until thats fixed.

It renders faster on simple scenes, freezes on larger scenes (mine was about 80meg, nothing fancy). It won't give any reasons or errors, just stop. - the reply I got from tech support is "we are currently working on several issues with the rendering engine"
(example: Haunted Mansion back wall with books, 1 nekid V4, hair, several other book props, three lights, resolution settings dropped to nearly null = P7 freezes 1/3 way after about 4 hrs; P6 completes entire render at full resolution in under 4 hours, plus three other animal characters had been added once success was achived - - - all this data and more has been submitted to tech support once verified)

Other then that I stopped using P7 as I don't do single character portraits often (which P7 seems to do well) and the work arounds for Alpha channels was a pain, the navigating libraries one level at a time was annoying to say the least and the consistant interface lags was all enough for me to return to P6 until P7SR1 is released.
Aside from that, the new lights looked nice but I never made it to some of the other stuff (spent too many weeks trying to accomplish just two rather simple composited scenes that P6 was able to complete in under a week)

I agree with what igohigh said.  The Opaque channel in tiff and png saves kills all my potential uses for it.  The low quality of jpegs saves kills the other half of uses for me.  I don't know what the manufacturers were smoking when they green-lighted this product!  If they ever fix it to the point of use, I'll be happy to use it.
