Since the hot 20 went away, you really can't find things like that. IIRC, you used to be able to view the top rated, or most commented on pictures. The two seem to go hand in hand with "good". Then it's up to you on what you call "recent". Newer always means ranked lower in the most commented/rated scheme because they don't have a 6 year "tail" in which to rack up sometimes hundreds of ratings.

In our last phone conference meeting, I had suggested to the Admins bringing back some sort of "best recent" area, for every Gallery.
Even if that meant having that area only in our Bryce Community page (which those are on the come back list for sometime in the future)

Wasn't there the problem of a popularity contest with the H20? The problem with every gallery here is that you will end up with the more prolific posters and chatters (insert whistling smiley here) within those galleries having more views, thus more ratings. As will those whose names are well known in this forum. The images ending up on the best 50 Bryce images will not necessarily be the VERY best of all the Bryce images though a few well-known top artists will still rise to the top.
There is amazing art being created by quiet artists that gets barely a nod or a view. Then too, we all like something different....so what's really the best of the best? I'm afraid if the 'top rated' comes back we'll have the same situation as the H20. Kind of a catch22...oh well.
I don't like the art charts cos I have no real interest in the poser content on show. The hot 20 thing was far too controversial especially within the Bryce community and led to endless threads condemning certain members appearance in this and leading to some members leaving because of it. I do however miss the hot 20 not just for Bryce but Terragen and Vue as it enabled me to check out the best of each gallery and pick up new fav artists from time to time.
A catergorised art charts for each software would be better in a way, as I feel too much talent is getting buried under the mountain of poser chicks. On the other hand we could all be back to square one and the arguements would surface again.
http://joevinton.blogspot.com/
I made a joke about "Poser Chicks" view counts when I first started here at Ren and how it wasn't art, but just showing how sex sells(excluding some well done, and thought out works). This isn't the only site of course, that this happens. Look at some like CGTalk and other, same thing for "Chick" views etc... I do go through the gallery almost on a daily basis here, and see some VERY well done but forgotten artists pictures, and never see them again, cause they get buried in the dates/flow with no way to find/see them easily.
What bugs me the MOST is when I see a picture I like but the artist doesn't give the info on post work(i.e. was that building/figure/item made in Bryce alone or content or Poser or or..you get the idea ). Which brings the point that there should be catagories, like they have now, but the top 5(or more views)in each for the month. That way I know what best Im looking for(chicks or other, lol)and can remember where and how I saw the pictures for future info.
Obviously, the majority of art viewers enjoy and love viewing Poser Chicks, that's why there are so many of them and they proliferate the galleries. We here are kind of like the Miller Lite drinkers who can't believe that people actually like Budwieser. Somebody out there does because it's the number 1 beer in the US (or was). Poser Chicks are not going away.
Because they swamp the Renderosity Art Gallery Listings it would be nice if Poser had its own listing. But a new problem would occur. Brycers would take over the listings so that Terragen, Vue and Carrara would be buried. Not sure there's a way to make everyone happy.
If the data base computer could instantly calculate the popularity of an image normalized to the number of artists in that particular category at that day, then Terragen, Vue, Carrara , etc... would not be buried under Bryce. Another words, 5 votes for Terragen would hold as much power as 20 votes for Bryce, and 50 votes for poser. Just a thought.

I agree 100% with you on that idea max-Back when art charts was first floated, I said pretty much exactly the same thing (or voiced the same concerns about larger galleries swamping out the smaller ones) and I still believe that normalizing the data sets is the way to go with something like that.

Yup, that is THE thought, imho.

Thinking about the normalizing some more - it would be possible that people could post in a really small gallery to rort the system.
For example, say someone submitted an image to the xfrog gallery (yes... there is an xfrog gallery) and then got one of his friends to view and favouritise it (from memory art charts mainly go by number of favourites). The fact that only one image has been posted to that gallery for the last year will then mean that the normalize/weight process would blow it up through the stratosphere compared to everything else on the site, hence launching it to no1.
So you'd probably need some minimum qualifier (perhaps a minimum number of views or something before an image would qualify for the art charts) that an image would need before being "chartable".
And if there was going to be some minimum qualifier numbers, the tricky thing would be what it would be as some galleries have really small viewing numbers, no matter how brilliant the work in them might be.

Hey flak, your last comment hit one of the nails on the perverbial head. Those same artists who have created a masterpiece that almost no one has viewed would be left out. Maybe they can't make a decent thumb so nobody looks at it. Could happen, lol.
How about a ratio of views to favorites? On the charts, there was a Bryce image with 117 views and 9 favorites at rank 31. At rank 12 was a Poser image with 10 favorites and 553 views. Maybe it's just me but that seems flipped; a ratio would have adjusted that.
That's a very good idea, Burpee.
Of course, there is always the old fashioned way: the supreme council of twelve elders. 12 retired art teachers, artists and museum directors with lots of time on their hands would judge and score every image from 1.00 to 9.99.
"An Example is worth Ten Thousand Words"
Hey Max_, the part about 'lots of time on their hands' kind leaves out everyone I know, lol.
There's no perfect way. It would be nice to have a way to view the top rated rated/viewed/commented pics within a given gallery without having to surf the one million entries in place. The people who are on other's favorite lists will get more views, etc. than the unknowns but I guess the unknowns will have to earn their places on fave lists. If you consistently make good art they will come ;)
I don't think that all that many "art" viewers spend time looking at the Poser Chicks. There are an awful lot of people on this site who have never posted an image, and probably wouldn't know real "art" if it smacked them in the face. But, they like looking at T&A, whether photographic or virtual.
That doesn't bother me half as much as the ones who, again have never posted an image ... not one, but feel free to troll other people's galleries and post comments. Yeah, I know .... even non-artists should be able to view and comment on art work -- freedom of speech and all that stuff -- but it still bugs the heck out of me. I find that whenever I get a critical (not in a nice "here's what you need to do to fix this" way) comment, the first thing I do is go to that person's gallery to see if they have a clue what they are talking about. As far as I'm concerned, if there are no images posted, that person's comment is just garbage to be ignored.
I don't miss the H20 for what it was .... because too much crap showed up there. However, what would be nice would be something that I think someone did here once ... and I know I've seen it done on other forums. That's where someone starts a thread about great pieces they have seen come up in the galleries (that are just Poser for example), and everyone gets directed to the work.
That way, it's not a matter of how many votes something gets. If I've been lucky enough to see something really worth while, I would just post it to that thread and tell the rest of you that ... you NEED to see this!!
Well, I'm babeling on .... but then I've had an awful day.
Could be worse, could be raining.
rickymaveety - yeah, a few of us have tried making those weekly lists of "impressive pictures that hadn't made it into the hot20" from time to time. I tried it for about a month quite a while back and Ang25 and ICM (and possibly others) have tried to do it as well. My impression through it all was that when the crunch came, there didn't seem to be that many people that interested in them or keeping them going. All power to you if you can get them up and running though :) and hope your day gets better.

damnit - edit time window ran out mid sentence.
burpee - a ratio might help in some way... but then you've still got to watch out for the odd image creator who has 10 friends (real or clone) and gets 10 views and 10 favs for everything that they post and this might skew things badly.... and then we're starting to head towards the old issues that some had with the hot20.
Even in an environment with no deliberate rigging or rorting, I doubt we'll ever get to something that everyone could agree on, simply because so many people have different ideas of what makes an image deserving or not deserving of their recognition, but it's sure fun trying to formulate the solution :)

OK all I would like to see instead of a rigged hot 20 type of thing is a way to track thru normal stats like this weeks most viewed, this weeks most commented. Something like that might not give you necessarily the best but it will be a bit harder to rig than having a couple buddies voting. Also be able to do that for genre's like Sci fi or characters etc.
I would like to be able to look at art minus a gallery too. Actually show everything but poser. etc. I know it is a bit mean but poser artists tend to be prolific and it is hard to find the good work being doen in Lightwave and C4D and Carrera etc. Without having to select those galleries because for every non poser pic there are two or three poser pics.
The wit of a misplaced ex-patriot.
I cheated on my metaphysics exam by looking into the soul of the

I like Dann-O's idea. Thinking about it, wouldn't it be possible for members to simply select the galleries they do want to see? I'm imagining something like the forum page, where forums can be hidden and preferences for each member memorised. If you could just check options about which galleries or genres you wanted to see that would be good.
So far as i see the whole Art Chart/Hot20 rating thing is complicated by the fact that there are people who will rate just about anything in the Poser gallery.
Thus I've ignored the Art Chart... and I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything, since I still see huge amounts of incredible work by you guys when I look through the galleries.

With this new system in place, how would you go about finding the best weekly or monthly Bryce images without having to go through thousands? I tried the art charts but they seem to show mostly Poser chicks, which is fine to a point, but what if you get tired of viewing Poser chicks? I wish there was a way to narrow it down to Bryce only, or maybe there is?
