Dont think there is much difference, but it sounds more crisp and tasty. :)

originalmoron,

I wish you could teach me how to do that.  What program did you use to model that?

Fran, I use AC3D for all my modeling. Any modeling program will do, but its probably easyer in a  program like Cinema4d or max or Siio or even Wings because of the more advanced features those have. I have to do everything by hand in AC3D, but I like the program so I'll stick with it :)

I'd still like to see how you did it, and chance of a tut at all?

A tut would only show the making of one nurnie. You still have to have the imagination to make many different ones. But I may do one if I get the time or urge :)

I'd definitely like to see it.  It does depend also on what you class as one nurnie...

I got 20 now. Think I'll stop there. Feeling all warm and fuzzy inside as well. That may on the other side just be because of the flu. Here is a picture of the 20 nurnies.

I think the difference between greebles and nurnies has been explained in the past. Alas, I can't remember which is which. One refers to 'fiddly bits' used in models in movies, and the other doesn't...let me wiki it, brb..;)

**Greeble-**is a small piece of detailing added to break up the surface of an object to add visual interest to a surface or object, particularly in movie special effects. Greebles are closely related to nurnies.

Nurnies are bits of detail on objects, usually models, both physical and computer-generated, of fictional technology, that serve no real purpose other than to add complexity to the object. The detail can be made from geometric primitives, including cylinders, cubes, and rectangles, combined to create intricate, but meaningless, surface detail. Nurnies are commonly found on models or drawings of fictional spacecraft in science fiction. Nurnies are closely related to greebles.

The term was coined by Ron Thornton, a pioneering 3D artist and founder of Foundation Imaging.

In the movie Short Circuit 2, Johnny 5 says "Don't forget the nurnies" while assembling a toy version of himself.

Examples may also be seen copiously in the original three Star Wars movies, with uniforms, weapons, armor, and ships. Most of the weapons carried were replicas of common World War II firearms with "extra" vents, scopes and other unneeded pieces added on.

frankly, I don't see much difference..;)-Pakled

Thanks, pakled!!  I suppose I could have looked it up myself, but thanks for saving me the trouble.

So, they are closely related ... it's just that nurnies have more detail.

If you don't talk to your friends about "nurnies", who will?

attileus ( ) posted Tue, 20 February 2007 at 3:40 AM

Thor, I checked AC3D and its greeble plug-in; it says that you can make custom greebling with 3d meshes/nurnies so I wonder if you could make a simple demonstration of this feature on an object or spaceship assigning nurnies (via custom greebling) to an area/areas of the object?
I wish Wings3D could do this.

originalmoron ( ) posted Tue, 20 February 2007 at 5:53 AM

Well, it can't MAKE the custom greeble, you have to make the objects yourself. But it can place the nurnies you make all over your model like the standard greeble in the plugin. A sweet feature indeed. Makes it a whole lot easier to add stuff to your model. The link is to the greeble plugin and how you use it with both standard and custom greeble.

If you use Blender (heresy alert..;), there's something called 'discombobulator' that can do simple box-type gurneis/neeblies, I made a tutorial in the Blender area of tutorials. It's one of the few things I actually use Blender for. If Wings had it, I wouldn't need blender..;)

Thanks Thor, I've checked that site. Sorry if I wasn't clear; I know that you have to make the nurnies yourself; I was interested to see how AC3D will automatically distribute pre-made nurnies on an object (instead of using only simple greebling); it would have been cool to check this feature in action with your excellent nurnies.
