Subject: P7 versus P6 Rendering Quality. Big Difference?

Inspector2211 ( ) posted Thu, 01 March 2007 at 4:20 PM · edited Thu, 15 August 2024 at 5:49 AM

Hey Folks,

I've been away for a while.  Is P7 a huge leap in rendering quality over P6?  I'm trying to get back into 3D work and am pondering the upgrade and investing in some new content from our vendors here.

So how does V4 compare with the G2 figures?

Regards,
DH

I love P6 and am sure I'd love P7 too, for the reported increased speed, but so far, not a single render from P7 looks any different from P6 as far as I can tell. I've looked at a lot of them.

P7 supposedly has some disabled features for doing global illumination. The guys in the Python forum found how to turn it on. But I've seen no renders using it. If P7 had GI, or had a proper subsurface scattering, that would be an enormous improvement. As far as I know, neither present. I suspect it is broken or they certainly would have put a way to use it into the GUI, not just the Python interface.

So I'm not bothering with P7 for now.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

After some additional browsing this seems to make sense.  Thanks for the feedback !!!

Opening a P6 scene in P7 should not result in a different render quality. If the scene is relit with the new HDRI image based lighting, it should result in a better look. Without changing anything in the P6 scene, I wouldn't expect a difference in the render.

I looked through the Python forum, and found nothing about this. Do you have a link to a particular thread?

Attached Link: Poser 7 Python Discussion

Here is the P7 discussion I saw that talked about how to turn on GI in P7.

I, too, could not find it because it had been "archived" - that is the stupidest feature rendo ever did. Archive a forum after 30 days that has only about 200 posts a year is just an annoyance. It doesn't reduce server load at all.

Archiving should be based on volume, not age. The Python forum, in it's entire history, has fewer posts in it than this one does in a month.
