Photography F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 26 6:56 am)
This is something I have just got into.Yes there are a huge amount of sites selling photographers work, some offer them for a pittance and some sell at a good price and from what I have read some guys do make a good living out of it.
I checked out quite a few sites and whilst a lot of the work is good there is quite a lot of mediocre dross on there.
I have sold a couple of pics,on one of the cheap sites so I am now looking to try out some of the more pricey sites.
I wouldn't pay for someone to show my images as there are plenty of up market sites that take a commission.
I would say give it a try,OK you may never sell a pic but you do get a buzz when you do.
And one thing is for sure - your images ain't gonna sell sitting on you hard drive.
Eddie
Yes there are plenty who sell their images this way.
You need to target your market quite specifically though, and shoot the kind of images that sell.

Great question. I stumbled across one of these sites a few weeks ago myself and had the same thought - if it's something that people have had some experience and success with.
I don't think I'm ready to put anything on one of the sites. I'm a newbie trying to find my style at this point, but I was cusious and thought it might be a goal in the future.
I would love the hear from someone that could say, "Yes, I use these sites and this is the primary way I sell my work" or is this something that can be a ego boost and get some pics our in the marketplace but will never amount to anything financially significant? I'm not expecting any photographers are getting rich off sites like this, but I wonder if a high-demand pic on one of these sites represent tens of dollars, hundreds of dollars, or more?
I guess ultimately, like Onslow says you would have to know the market and tailor pictures that would be useful for business publications and what not. That doesn't really interest me, so I suspect I'm out, but I'd still like to know more about it from people with experience.
I guess this was just a really long way to go to say "ditto" to your original question. Sorry.
David.
PS..I posted the sign earlier in this forum but thought it be nice to show my original images also.

I do occassionaly (it´s been a while now though) upload crap-photos to two of those sites: Fotolia and Dreamstime. I figure that instead of deleting them all together they might as well serve some purpose. So far these photos have been sold about 350 times and that has given me as much money as 4 sold photos from my own store would, lol. So it´s not a very lucrative business.

My opinion is that it is not a good idea to submit your photographs to 'micropayment' sites eg: Dreamstime. They prey on amateur photographers who don't know anything about the business. They will sell your pics for a dollar, royalty free for anyone to use as many times as they wish, for any purpose they see fit.
If you are represented by a reputable agency they will sell for a fair price a licensed copy, or a royalty free copy for an appropriate fee.

If you include the copyright i´d be willing to purchase your entire gallery...for lets say $50....that would be travel checks however. :tt2:

I´d hate to be the one to correct you my good Sir...but it´s actually "kronor" and not "kroner". :tt2: But yes...i suppose that´s the currency i´d prefer dealing with....so that would equal up to perhaps 6 dollars. And tell ya what....you can keep the copyright. As you so cleverly (is that even a word???) put it....it has lost alot of its value.

Noooooooooooooooooo!!! Thank God. Sweden did enter the EU sadly enough. But they never joined the EMU. 1 euro is like 10 swedish kronor...so that means that my paycheck would be one decimal shorter, and i´m not sure i could´ve handled that. :tt2:
My sincerest apologies to vulcanccit for participating in the downfall of this thread.

Good thinking Garlor. Not everyone has the time of ability to do that and do it well, but it is truly the best route (IMHO).

I did not have the time to set up my site, the first one was static and I had to go via the website builder to add my own pics. With my current site the new web designer worked to my brief. He did it for a good price and is happy to provide sites across the world. It is designed to load quickly even on non broadband users. Its a showcase and stock library. Two stock sales have paid for set up cost.

My site needs more input from me over the next 2 months,I have some new ideas and need to add free wallpaper downloads. Also remove some pics which are oversaturated and add new pics.
Doing it this way means I get all the proceeds from my stock sales.
i will pass on designers address if you are interested .
I got word back from the site I tried...Stockxpert.com that my work did not meet their standards. I uploaded some of my highest rated pics from this site. Not sure what they want but if they didnt like it then ***k em heheh
I do have my own site but am not sure how to get it known. I made it myself and could easily add the "add to cart" feature, but who would even find it?
@vulcanccit...yes, it may take you a few tries to get "certified" at some of these sites....usually they will tell you the reasons. Most often the rejections are due to noise.
As for your own site....perhaps a starting point to make it more well known would be to add a link to it in your signature here and at any other sites you may frequent.
Best of Luck!
In youth, we learn....with age, we understand.
The question is why were you rejected - did your images meet their required criteria.
If not then try and reach their requirements.
But you should't give up over one rejection.
Try a couple of other sites, there is no shortage of them.
Look at it like your early love life, just because the first girl said no it dodnt mean they all would :-)
They did not give a reason, just referred me to a faq. The only thing I can think of is like someone said, noise, but I use the equipment they refer to, and I didnt have any postwork taht I remember on the shots.. so who knows... I think I would rather just have my own site, see if I can make it known and just sell when someone is compelled to buy.
http://www.chuckcondron.com is the site. I do not have every shot up just yet, nor a add to cart...just a simple site...
I tried to log onto your site but it wouldnt load, also found it on a google search but it still wouldnt load, maybe just one of those internet quirks.
I will try again tomorrow.
Paypal is not too hard to use,I can send you details of what to do and how to put the html into your pages if you need it.

I was looking for some links about Still Life for the new Genre challenge this month, and I stumbled onto a site called Shutterpoint. It is a site that sells stock photos that Photographers upload. I then searched for Stock photo sites and found a bunch of them.
My quesiton is, have any of you ever sold a photo on these types of sites? Seems to me there are so many photos on those sites, yours would be lost in a sea of shots.. Seems like maybe a waste of money for the ones that charge you....other sites seem to be free, but im cautious of them.
What is your opinion? Do you sell your photos? I saw a thread called "what do you do with your photos...." One person answered "I delete most of mine" heheh I cracked up on that one as I do too heheh
