Saw it last night, was not overly impressed (the editor needs to be bitch-slapped for such a bad hack job) Anyway, the CG landscapes looked a lot like Worldbuilder and quite frankly, were pretty cheap looking for a movie that cost that much. There was a CG waterfall in particular that looked totally fake. Even worse was the CG model of the Scorpion King in the big final fight scene. Really bad texture mapping...reminded me of the CG character from The Lawnmower Man. Might have been impressive 5 or 6 years ago, but not now. All in all The Mummy Returns has to be seen as a giant step backwards for integrating CG into mainstream movies. Of course, this is all just my opinion ;) -SMT

Well that's my opinion about alot of this fantasy stuff now. It is TOTALLY overdone, by mindless Hollyood types who have TONS of cheap George Lucas wannabees available nowadays. These people who think they are so cool and advanced are really 5-10 years behind the real "next thing".. That's why the movie trend by the Big Thinkers is switching to REALISM special effects. Example- "Enemy At The Gates", plot- a "B", special effects "A+". Done with Maya, BTW... "Pearl Harbor" has totally awesome live shot-3D effect combos that are setting the NEXT BIG standard- REAL REALISM...With REAL CHARACTERS, from REAL HISTORY- but done with state-of-the-art SFX. "Titantic" was the single greatest example of this so far, and James Cameron, who made tons of money with the Terminator movies, had the vision to MOVE ON to the next level. Michael Bay of "Pearl Harbor" also has this same vision of combining a REAL great story with top-of-the-line special effects...

Now here's a thread I'd love to see moved to C&D. Not because I mind it here, which I don't at all, but just because I'd love to see what others here say about this sort of thing. I thought The Mummy Returns was overall pretty cheesy, actually. I can't specifically remember the scenes you're talking about Steve, but I do remember specifically thinking it wasn't as good as it could have been. I haven't seen Pearl Harbor, but i agree about Titanic--- simply awesome effects! I don't have much time for movies these days, except for the occasional Pay Per View, or if I pick something up at Blockbuster. Then of course there's HBO, but it seems they're always playing the same damn movie every time I turn it on!

"Pearl Harbor" isn't out yet. It premieres on May 25. I'm biased because I am a major WW-II history buff, and I think Pearl Harbor was probably the single most important event in modern history. That one Sunday morning in Hawaii affected the lives of nearly the entire world in one way or another... But THIS movie has absolutely MASSIVE publicity behind it, like over $200 Million in publicity, plus a $150 Million budget. I predict it will make probably 1 to 1.5 BILLION in sales. Disney is making this their "Star Wars" and "Titanic" and putting a HUGE effort into promoting it...
