Cyberware, the guys that made the scanner that princeton graphics used for the virtual michalengelo project, has some very large samples from their products. click on the word samples at the left after you open the link above to see them.

These models are free and in ply format. Bryce won't read it but Blender will, and can convert to obj. 

Warning! these are very large files. The satva at center was from th 50%  37MB ply. It took Blender 30 minutes to convert to a 69MB obj file. Make sure the filename you save it is typed NAME.obj. I tried leaving the .obj off and blender didn't make a mat file for some reason.

Rhino v.4 does as well....  wow,,  these were scanned from real statues....

Yeah, I had left Bryce (to watch tv) as it was impoting that giant obj, lol. Never did any finished renders with these, but I do have another similar link somewhere...for some other models I don't think many people have seen.........lemme go find it.

Found it.

"Vierge" From the Victoria & Albert Museum, London
Bryce 6.1 using the HDRI "PS Neighbor"

Model along with many others (67 meshes total) are available here;
http://www.tsi.enst.fr/3dmodels/index0.html

They are in the VRML format, and will need to be converted for Bryce to be able to import them, best to convert them to .obj to keep any uv info.

NOTE 1 - Like electroglyph stated, the resulting meshes can be very large, so they can take some time to import.

NOTE 2 - Be sure to also download their textures, which are in the .png format. They will look strange, but Bryce will be able to read the uv's and apply the texture correctly. (keep it wrapped Parametrically)

AS:  I downloaded two Buddha files .cgi and .wrz I saw the png texture file but I can not download the model... can you explain which file is which and how to convert to Bryce...

The model will be the .wrz file

I could use my Winrar to uncompress them, which if you do they will come out as .wrl which is the VRML format.

I forget what can convert these vrml files....I had a buddy of mine do it for me. I believe his work has that converter from Right Hemisphere.

What I'm looking for is a classic looking buddha, and not one in the thai style or a dancing fat buddha. The reason is when I was studying at LSU, one day I noticed a photography book in the section of the university's bookstore for local (in state) authors. This photographer made a book of his travels, and there was one particular photo that I would never forget. It was taken from an aircraft flying like one or two hundred feet above water in south asia, near china somewheres. There were two small islands, no way a plane or even a helicopter could land. But these two islands were basically two large rocks, the type you see in old Chinese paintings of the southern provinces. One island had a statue of a buddha being carved from it, several caves going into the rock. The second island had a few huts/shacks up the rock face, a rope bridge to the other island. Both islands had a small tiny beach just large enough for a few boats. The whole thing looked small. These were not wide islands..... Anyway....

I've been wanting to reproduce this in Bryce. It's stayed in my memory for years and it was like something out of hollywood fantasy. So if anyone knows of some good looking buddha's, kinda like the great wooden buddha's popular in japan, that sort of style, that would be perfect.

I got a balanese type buddha from the old avalon. Unfortunately my main computer is down until I pay off $800 on one car and a $1200 transmission on another. Right now I can't get to any of my old meshes. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

Downloaded the .ply files. They look very interesting but now I need to convert them to .obj files to import into Bryce.

I took electroglyph's advise and d/l'd  Blender but I can't make heads or tails of it. I could not find any basic tutorial either here in the Blender forum or on the Blender sites (maybe I missed something).

Is there a simple tut somewhere that shows you how to import  and convert .ply files without going too deeply into Blender's modeling, rendering and animation functions? (...that will come later, right now I just want to convert the .ply files to use in Bryce.)

guslaw - don't be afraid to post in the blender forum, we don't bite ;)  There are also lots of tutorials on the blender3d.org website if you click on "tutorials and help" up at the top of the screen.

**How to convert .ply files with blender:
**(I haven't actually finished downloading the files in question yet, but the import/export works pretty much the same for file types)

  1. Open blender (😉)
  2. There will be a box in the middle of the screen.  It's highlighted around the edge in pink, that means it's selected.  Hit the 'x' key or the 'delete' key to get rid of it.  This isn't necessary, but it makes things easier.  A box will come up asking if you really want to do that, just hit enter.
  3. Go to file-->import-->stanford PLY.  This will open up a window where you will navigate to where the file is on your hard drive, select the file, and hit the import PLY button in the upper right.  I'm assuming you can figure this window out, but if not just ask--it can be a little quirky, but I've gotten used to it and can't remember what needs clarification.
  4. The model should import into the scene when you push the import button, and you should see it in the middle as a pink (selected) object.  This may take a while depending on the size of the mesh.
  5. If the mesh was not selected (i.e., not pink), hit the z key so it draws the wireframe only (this allows you to select all objects, not just the front ones), then hit the b key and draw a "box" around the object with your mouse to select it.
  6. Go to file-->export-->wavefront obj.  You will get a similar file browser window as before.  Navigate to the place on your hard drive where you want to save it, then in the second line in the window type in something like filename.obj.  The .obj part is very important, don't leave it out.

ok, I just imported one of the meshes, it took a long time to import so don't be discouraged if the program seems to hang for a couple minutes.  It also imported reeeeeally tiny, but you can zoom in to see it with your mouse scrollwheel.

Thank you very much haloedrain. Got it, your instructions worked like a charm. The Blender interface/directory selection process is a bit confusing and unusual though, but I guess I'll get used to it eventually...

My first priority is to learn Autodesk Inventor. That's for real-life work so I guess it has to come first but Blender (or some other 'organic' modeling app for my recreational use) will definitely be next...

Darn haloedrain,

I just got back from my sister in law's in Madison. Went right through Atlanta twice. If i'd known you were in a biting mood I could have stopped by.

Back on the subject for a moment; When you say import ply into blender a text directory window shows up. It usually starts in the blender program directory. the first two names in the text window are (.)dot and (..)dot dot. To move up one level in the directory tree click on dot dot. To move down click on a folder name and it will open to show a new set of subfolders and filenames.

You can type the address where you stored the ply files along the top box C:/documents and settings/my documents....etc.

Deep Exploration opens a ply file right up  and you can save it to 3ds in no time and then Bryce is happy..Get the people..The detail is great...
