It's like a lost continent, everyone knows about it but can never remember where it is.

Back in the olden days, they had these things called Bulletin Board Systems.  You dialed into them - when you could get a line, because you see, they usually had 2 or 3 lines and they were always busy - with your 300 baud modem.  You could type stuff and other people could type stuff back at you.  I never had any truck with it, too much one handed typing going on if you know what I mean.

Later on, but still in the olden days I reckon, at my university we had this thing called Internet Relay Chat.  Legions of college students typing with one hand.  Deplorable.

Nowadays you can't swing a cat without hitting somebody's instant messaging thingy.  It's disgusting and uncouth.

I have no IM programs on my box. No ICQ, no MSN, no Yahoo, no AOL or anything else. As you put it in the olden days, depends on what "olden" is for you but for me in my college age years there was no such thing as a PC, anyway I have spent a lot of time on an IRC

I go in sometimes. Sometimes when I go there are a few people chatting amongst themselves in a language I don't understand. Other times I'm in there all by myself.

I've had too much going on (learning co-ordinator stuff), dealing with computer issues, redoing my content filing system, and dealing with doctors and tests that I haven't been spending much time in chat or the main forums these days.

FWIW I have had good and bad experiences

Bad: No one there or they are having such an intense conversation that it feels just too rude to interrupt

Good: Met Moebius in there once and got the chance to tell him how much I admire his work...I think I might have called him the 'god of lightwave modeling', but he took it well ;-)

And as for now...sorry but I rarely use any kind of chat software since the novelty of meeting weirdos from all over the world via IRC wore off...

it was pretty boring, the few times I tried it. not worth using IMVHO. there also seemed to be one or more cliques there, so to me it was as bad as the old C&D forum. there were some folks I liked (e.g. angel, nomuse, shrelk (sp?), raj, blondie et al.) who had a sense of humour, were capable of mature conversations and imparting useful info, but the rest of 'em ..... well, the less said, the better

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Wed, 14 March 2007 at 2:33 PM

It's a different dynamic too. It's easy to go away from the forum for a few minutes or hours and still be able to pick up a conversation. In chat, it requires a block of time and your 100% attention. In my case, I seldom have that.
Forum posting dynamic works much better in my case.  :)

actually the old core group of chat regulars got disgusted at management and all bunked off to Artzone chat.  It got very old having a trigger happy moderator in there 24/7

so it should be a nice empty chatroom for you all to make a new group of regulars in . :)

Tried it once - it didn't work. I just tried it again just for the heck of it ... it didn't work. Getting a socker server connection failure. I have neither the time nor interest to find out more.

I used to pop in during work, but, once you get past the greeting stage, it was just a quiet long stare waiting for someone to say anything.  Trying to get a conversation started was like pulling teeth, and the usual response to any question I had was, "Check the forums, I think there's a thread on that."

I also enjoyed chatting for a few months back in the 110 baud
phone-in-the-cradle Prodigy days.   Quickly discovered it was
entirely too easy to make a total fool of myself.

In a forum I can swallow my first response, swallow my second
response, and finally type if I still have anything to say.

This procedure keeps the percentage down to about 80% fool.
