Subject: Tile Size In Hypervue

Jonj1611 ( ) posted Thu, 22 March 2007 at 9:54 AM · edited Fri, 27 October 2023 at 6:01 PM

Hi,

I have checked the manual and unless I missed it I cannot see it anywhere.

Does anyone know if changing the tile size helps renders over multiple machines render quicker?

If it does what is a good optimum tile size?

Thanks
Jon

Whats a tile? You mean textures? or do you mean the images resolution?

Tile size, its an option in Hypervue.

Its not textures and not image resolution.

Hypervue is just the network manager, the only options that are from hypervue are the ones from network rendering manager. If you mean tile rendering at the rendering options, then I would recommend not using it at all as tile rendering only gets you a benefit when you render directly to the screen, otherwise its rather a disadvantage as its slower.

If you dont mean tile rendering then you must have another version of vue then me. I am using Vue Esprit 6 and cant think of anything else. In my Vue the word "tile" itself only appears in the render options screen. Maybe you can post a screenshot of your settings, that could make it easier for other users to see your settings and give advice what to tune up.

Hi Jon,

If you have computers which are different speeds, then changing the tile size to something smaller will indeed help, as you can finish more smaller tiles on slower machines.

So, if one machine renders 4 times as fast as another, then if HyperVue divides the scene into quarters, the faster machine ends up rendering all the tiles...no speed advantage there.

But, if you set the tiles so that HyperVue renders 24 tiles, then you may get 4 to 5 tiles rendered from the slower machine. Somewhat of a savings.

You'll have to balance the number of tiles for a single image with the number of network saves it will have to do. If there are 100 tiles and half of them are rendered off of the main computer, then they will have to be saved back from the network to the main computer 50 times. Not necessarily a huge problem, but one nonetheless.

HTH,
Chipp

PS You need to work fast to set the tile size! For some reason HyperVue closes that option after about 5 or 6 seconds after launching.

Hi Chipp,

Many thanks for the explanation :)

And you are correct about it closing the option quick, its usually just greyed out as I am trying to input something.

Thanks again
Jon
