Subject: depth of field - adjusting problem in vue 6

estherau ( ) posted Fri, 23 March 2007 at 7:32 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 8:50 PM

Using the camera object menu. Is there a way of it just doing the background from a certain point and not blurring the foreground at all. My target objects are separated by several metres, and after they are in focus I would like the background to blur. The other thing would be to turn down the blur below 1% but vue doesn't seem to do this. Love esther

best way to do blur, is actually in post!
richard rosenmann does a superb plugin just for this: depth of field pro
just save a z depth render and use the plugin in post, very worth the 35 or so dollars it costs :)

I actually do have his plug somewhere. I'm a mac user but do occasionally use my PC as well. However in the vue manual it says their DOF is better than doing postwork in any paint program so I was keen to give it a shot. But all I've had is crashes or blur where I don't want it. I did in fact get it to take less thant 1% blur with camera object selected but only once. NOw I'm having memory issues too. Love esther

I'm not sure what my windows computer is, but I have a mac with poser loaded onto it that I use for my 3d stuff. It should be able to take advantage of more than 2 gig. I have 2 gig at the moment. Love esther

Esther,

You can adjust the depth of field using the camera focal length.  The higher the focal length the greater the dof.  Using your top view, you can  see lines in the camera field of view showing the area that is in focus... anything between the lines is in focus, anything between the camera and the first line and beyond the second line is blurred.

1% is usually fine and, for a still image, I would recommend Hybrid 2.5 in the render blur settings over distributed ray trace which is pretty noisy.

Esther - I done some tests a while back in Vue 5 and found that even though the DOF will always show 1%, if you set it to .5% (for example), it will render the DOF at .5%.
I've not tested it in Vue 6 yet, but would be surprised if it didn't act the same.

Cheers

Cheers I think you are probably right. But when I set it on 0.6 it looks like 0% not 1%. I just had trouble seeing, because I wanted high res pics and I kept getting out of memory messages. So I"ve ordered some more RAM. That would certainly be the most easy way of doing it ie use VUE and set it to a low percentage so all the things near the target are pretty much in focus too. Love esther
