Good thing Poser is on CD. You can reinstall it after repairs. As to 3rd party resources, check the various links at the bottom right of the Renderosity screen. You should be able to replace most of the stuff you lost. Greywolf

Must be something going around this week. My heretofore rock steady (didn't Aretha Franklin sing that?) P3 450 blew up Thursday. Good thing I believe in backup as a form of religion. Oh well, gave me the opportunity to put together a nifty 933 MHZ P3 with a gig of speedy DDR ram! I guess you've learned, but just in case -- think of backing up as your bank: GO there often and put something in. Good luck BTW! Larry F

Sorry to hear of your hard drive problems and machine issues :( when you get the box out of the shop, just reinstall Poser from your cd's, go to www.curiouslabs.com and grab the latest update/patch from there, and then you should be good to go on that end :) Next just search free stuff here, and at the various links listed down at the bottom of the right side menu, and you should find alot of free stuff to replace what you lost.

Shudder!!! I Use the "two hard drive" method on my Mac G3 My main drive is a quantum 20 GIG and i have a second internal hard drive that I call "site B" it contains a complete copy of my entire applications folder (5 gigs alone!!) a complete copy of all of my system/application extensions fonts, and my entire internet folder with bookmarks etc. Mac OS versions of applications are like completely self contained little Mini-operating systems and can therefore be simply copied via drag and drop from one location drive to another fully intact without having to actually reinstall them from the CD in their "Barebones" factory state. My self imposed backup policy is Draconian whenever i make a major change to a poser prop or figure library I delete the the entire poser4 folder from the backup drive and replace it with the most recent copy from the main drive. I Dont even bother with any of that Norton Disk doctor/diskwarrior rescue crap!! My policy is zero tolerance in regards to a malfunctioning system I have no problem starting up from th OS Cd rom and directing the mac os drive setup utility to intitialize my main drive completely erasing it!! because i can be fully restored from "site B" in one hour this may sound extreme but I sure do sleep better at night What backup /recovery schemes do you guy/gals use??? I do worry about Norton Utilities and sleep during the day. The 10Gig is ghosted on a Retrospect file on the second drive. Files I use all the time and rely on (and are no longer available) have their original zips in a folder on an email address on the far side of the sun. All other zips and less used files are on CDs, which is where the Retrospect files would be but for one oversight. It appears that I have bought a CD burner so advanced (Lacie firewire 12/10/32) that there is no compatible software for it untill Retrosmegg release the upgrade. That was January, since then there has been a System X beta, spiffing.

Not only should back-ups be done frequently, but virus scans should be done on everything that is downloaded from the web prior to opening. I've never gotten a poisoned file from Renderosity free stuff, but it only takes one. And it is probably wise to get one of the "firewall" software programs and use it to block intrusion into one's computer when on the internet. Norton has a good one available and easy to use.

If the stuff on the hard drive is valuable and irreplacable, you can contact the hard drive manufacturer to see if it can recover the data on the dead drive. Such a service is usually expensive, but if you're a professional and the work on your hard drive means income, it might be worth it.

Best backup I know -- and use -- is an external 30-Gb hard drive. Fast, easy, and safer than a second internal drive.
