Photography F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 31 10:42 am)
My vote is cast but it's really difficult to make a decision. As one who knows nothing about still life photography, it's hard to decide what makes a good shot, technically speaking - so I've gone for the one that I just "liked" the most - whether it's technically correct or not!!
Good luck to everyone - again, another fine selection to chose from. xx

Bruce, I wasn't saying that you hadn't provided us with plenty of information, I'm just not very good at technical things like light and shadow etc on close-up shots and knowing whether a shadow being cast from a still life shot of a bowl of fruit for example, is "allowed" (if this was a serious competition!) or whether a shot like that would be better if taken in a light tent so no shadows were cast.
I appreciate that this is a bit of fun for us all and allows us to practise using techniques that perhaps we wouldn't ordinarily do - this in itself has to be a good thing for all of us.
I just meant that the one I have voted for appealed to me and may not necessarily be technically correct.
I believe that where close-up shots are concerned, from the types of shots I see in the galleries, shadow is pretty much a "no, no" however, my daughter doesn't like pictures without shadows - she says they add depth, dimension and atmosphere to a picture - so which is the correct answer? I'm guessing the answer is both?
No offence intended at you or anyone else - I'll keep my big trap shut in future LOL!

@ geert: What defines a still life for you? I agree that many entries played fast and loose with the definition, but there are certainly more than 4 or 5. Still, it would have been nice to see a few more that adheared more strictly to the tradition definition. --voted-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_life

@ Kort: strange that you can read my reply, as I almost immediately deleted my post... is my reply still there?... because I can't see it... Yeah, I wrote that there aren't many images in there that qualify as still life... but I realised that my definition might be too strict and traditional. I studied the genre of still life from its origins, over the 'Golden Century' in Holland until modern times, and wrote about it... the pure still life as an art discipline, that is. But hey, times change, and everyone can fill in the definition as they see fit... certainly here in our photography section. That's why I deleted my reply... (and also because this thread wasn't the place to start a discussion on the subject). Still I believe that it takes more than just a capture of some objects for an image to be called 'still life'... And yes, I did vote..!

I did see your reply Geert...didn't realize you had deleted it, sorry. I was just curious about what for you defined a still life. Not to be antagonistic in any way, but perhaps for everyone's edification. Your have the added background in that art form and its history makes your insights valuable, in opinion. True, times change and genres evolve, but it is good to know from whence things came as well.
