Subject: Technical question on attaching parts of human figure to other objects.

I was faced with the following problem recently. I had posed a V3 figure on a vehicle character (the DAZ Skybike), and wanted to turn the handlebars of the bike. This meant that I had to extensively rework the pose to keep her hands on the handlebars. What I wanted to do was to somehow keep her hands attached to the handlebars, her feet to the pedals, and her butt to the seat. I could use IK, but my understanding is that IK attempts to anchor the feet and/or hands to fixed positions in space, not to objects.

Is it possible (in the joint editor maybe) to extend the IK chains to include parts of the bike? In this case, I probably have things easy because the front (including handlebars) and the footrests are all body parts of the bike. If the vehicle was a prop vehicle, an IK approach might not work as well.

Any suggestions?

After positioning and posing your character as appropriate, just turn on IK for the hands and legs, then parent the hands to the handlebars and the feet to the pedals.

Notes:
The only body parts that can be parented to something external to the figure are goals (end nodes) of an IK chain, and only when IK is turned on, this means that in normal figures only the hands and feet can be so parented.

When you parent a hand or foot to something it is "attached" to the 'origin' (Center Point) of that thing and will follow its rotations and translations.

OK. And I guess to keep her in her seat, I can turn collisions on for the body of the bike and the buttocks groups. Thanks, I'll try that out when I get a chance.

To keep her on the seat when the Skybike moves it may be sufficent just to parent the character to the appropriate part of the Skybike. Eg from the Poser menu bar; Figure > Set Figure Parent, then choose the appropriate part of the bike from the list. Doing this will parent the characters Body actor to the bike. I can't give you any advice on collision detection, as it is not something I have played with yet.

Collision detection is pretty CPU intensive, and you have to spin dials for it to work (you can't just set the parameter.) I found it pretty useful though in the lnked image to get her actually resting on the piano. (Very important for the reflections.)
