Archipelis is a neat proggy to turn some 2D images to 3D shapes. For quick prototyping and making 3D models by tracing 2D outlines. Once you have the shapes, they're uv-texture mapped with the original image showing right on it. You can save that to Wavefront OBJ and other formats and take it in for rendering and more, in Poser, Carrara, Bryce etc...
Another neat modeler in that broad category of 'Drawing 2D to make 3D shapes' is Curvy 3D, and I just saw that there is a free copy on the latest 3D World magazine of Curve 3D 1.0. More details at www.thebest3d.com/curvy

And a Bryce Nook :) Probably my favorite thing there. They highlight and interview an artist, showcase an image from the month, report happenings in the industry, challenge and contest winners (yep, contest going on now....a good one too....all about making Brycean terrains)....and my favorite part...they recap everything from the forum for the month including all the links. And...they showcase a few goodies that were uploaded to the freebies section.
It's a cool read if you don't go to the forum regularly and a great resource for links and information. Lots of how-to information.
Sorry, the contest is about making terrains, not just Bryce ones..Vue too. Probably other aps as well....gotta read the rules.
Hey, I'm here! Yeah, that's a fantastic camel pic, very clever - I wonder how many times he had to fly around to get the best one...
