I have noticed that when I import an avi or a background picture then I can't seem to make anything show up for the ground.  How do I do both? in order to make the floor grid look like its an actual ground I go to material room choose props> ground then insert a pictrure is this right or not?

The trick is, you need to uncheck the ShadowCatch Only box on Ground in the
Material room.  (You have to be in the Advanced section of the room to do this.)

Then save your general preferences, and the ground will be
a real ground forever after!

The default Display Mode for the GROUND plain is Wireframe. So in addition to turning off 'ShadowCatch Only', you have to set the 'Element Display Style' to 'Texture Shaded', if you want the GROUND texture to display in preview mode. And of course you need to make sure that Ground Plain is checked in the Display > Guides menu.
