I'm thinking of getting Vista on my PC but I am wondering how well Poser 6 or 7 runs under it.  In particular the 64bit version of Vista but any info even for the 32bit version of Vista would be welcome.  So if anyone can provide your experience with Poser 6 or 7 and Vista please do and please indicate if you are using the 32 or 64 bit version of Vista.  Thanks in advance.

Poser 7 an d Poser 6 run fine for me, but I had to turn off UAC... (for other programs, before I even installed Poser) 

I did not try Poser 5, since it would not run on my Win XP 64 Machine.

I am using 64 bit Vista Home Premium.

I will add that Vista does not like to Extract Installers that make use of Compressed Files. It wants to Extract all of them as well, which said Poser 7 at something like 33 hours and Poser 6 at 3 hours. I had the luxury of Extracting them on another machine and then Copying that over. (This will not be an issue if you have the Disks)

I use that machine mostly for the Internet, and rarely use Poser on it, since my main Renderbox is the XP 64 set up, so I am not sure if there are any minor quirks. I can open, create, render every scene I have tried.

I've been running Poser 7 SR1 under the 64 bit Vista business edition with no problems. I did have to set the compatibility mode to Win XP for P7 however.

How do you change the compatibility?  I managed to install poser 7 fine on the new notebook but Poser is having problems rendering. 

Never mind.  Found it.  

Right click on the poser.exe and it's in properties.  ;)  After doing that, it managed to render but hung at the end.  After a restart it rendered fine.  Now I'm trying it with complex scenes.  I don't find Vista to be the problem I thought it might be.   (yet)  :)

I'm running Poser 7 in Vista Ultimate x64 with absolutely no problems whatsoever. In fact, it runs a hell of a lot better than it did on XP x86.

Once again, I am seeing mixed reviews on this topic.  I'm considering getting Vista Ultimate -- but still I hesitate.

I've been told by someone that the clean install which many 'authorities' recommend really isn't such a good idea.  I've heard that a clean install can actually cause more problems with your software than it solves -- not to mention giving you a huge headache if you've got a lot of stuff which will need re-installing.  Like I do.

At the moment, one of the major points which has kept me away from installing Vista was its incompatiblity with AutoCAD 2007.  However -- the AutoCAD 2008 disk just arrived in the mail a couple of days ago.  So.........now.......maybe............

And then there's the question of going with 64-bit vs. 32-bit.  I have several programs which would benefit from 64-bit.  Like Lightwave, AutoCAD, Vue, and a few others.  But it's my understanding that some things simply won't run under 64-bit.  So I dunno......I'll need to invesitgate further.

That's true, zulu.  And that's another angle that I need to consider.  At the moment, it's looking like my best bet.

I have am using poser 7 on 32 bit with vista. It's slow. I turend off the uac too. But I did install vista when poser 7 was already installed. Should I uninstall and reinstall?

well, I think you should always install a new operating system onto a blank hard drive, i.e. reformat and then install vista. That's what I did. Some Vista speed tips: Turn off Aero Turn off UAC Turn off Search Indexing Turn off System Restore Don't use video desktops

I just got a new system with Vista...your speed tips looks great, but, how do I turn off the suggested items?  I've searched everything I could think of but came up with blanks...although, I already had system restore turned off.

Well, if you don't want to use Aero, go into the Display page of the Control Panel - go to themes and select to use Windows Classic. Not using dreamscenes (video desktops) is easy - just don't use them! It only comes with Vista Ultimate, which defaults to a static wallpaper anyway. User Account Control is a pain in the arse, gets in the way when you're trying to do...well...pretty much anything. The option for it is under Control Panel > User Accounts, although the easiest way of getting to it is to type UAC into the search box in the main Control Panel window. I do actually like Windows Search Indexing, but it is a system hog, so here's how to disable it. Note that you'll still be able to search, but it will be slower. Type in 'services' into the start menu search box (this is a seperate search system from file indexing) and click on the Services[.msc] that comes up as a result. Scroll down to Windows Search and you will see that it says that it has 'started' - that means it's running right now. Right click on Windows Search and select 'Stop'. Then right-click on it again and select Properties. In the General tab, set the Startup Properties to Disabled. And that's Windows Search Indexing disabled!

I've heard that Vista automatically defrags your hard-drive in the background, but I don't know how to disable that yet.
