It seems to me that the ability to sell a photograph may be enhanced by being able to sell it in a frame. 

I recently helped a friend create a framed photo as a gift.  The print cost $8 for a 16x20 -- and the custom frame cost about $162. 

If you were going to sell framed photos, wouldn't you like to make some of that profit? 

I asked my good buddy Google for some information and found framing4yourself.  The materials for that frame would have been about $50.  OTOH, the tools to make it would not have been free. 

Any other thoughts?

Thanks for the info. It helps to have all the right tools as framing and matting can get complicated at times. It is also time consuming, which is why frame stores charge what they do. If you have the time to do it, and plan to do a lot of framing, then it is worth investing in learning how to do it right and getting the right equipment. If it is only an occasional thing, I suggest leaving it to the professional framers.

I talk to a lot of people on framing and most will say to get the simple frams for the custom frams will cost a lot and the more comply frams sill take away from the image.  I just bought some frams that you can put a canvas in if you paint too. I bought it because it looks good and they was cheap. have to order at lest 4 of them at a time. They had plastic in intead of glass and the plactic did not look good in them even thought I clean them they was scratched so I going to have to go to the lumber yard here in town and get glass for $10 each. They cut for you.  this site have a lot of stuff on it

oh I bought the matt here too for 2.50 each . had to order a dorzon at a time I ordered 24 of them and learning to cut mats I loss 6 of them but I learned and it worth it. I can cut it better than the store here in town and I save money. do not take long to cut when you learn how.

Just a thought.....Could you practice on cardboard breakfast cerial boxes instead of wasting good mats at all? Jenny

yes you can but I the type that just jump in with both feet and go for it. lol I did waste a lot doing it that way but I got the feel of the mat boards too as I cut them. And most was my math errors I not strong in math. some was errors of not paying mind of what I was doing. if you are tried do not do it. Just go to bed and do it when you not falling asleep. I overcut  that way on two of the boards. now I was cutting big mats for big images the images was 18x24 and it would take a whole mat board to do it right. 
If you got photos that is 5x7 you can get a lot of mats out of on mat board which if i remember right is 30x40. do the math. a 5x7 photo needs at lest a 9x11 matt so you can cut at lest 4 matts I guess i not good in math. but if you can cut 4 matts it will just cost you at $2.50 a matt board it be around $0.61 cents. better than $5.00 each if cut at the store; and they will take halve inch off on the sides of your image. I just got a fourth of a inch around my image cut off.

oh and if you draw on the mat board on the wrong side. You will know you did this by looking at it. You can get some spay paint and spay that side. if the ink comes thought ;get a can of spay kilz and use it on the ink first then use the spay paint. I used some stone spay paint and it came out looking good.  You can spay any color you wish. Just remember you trying to show the photo off not you fram or mat.
why do I draw on it ?I drawing the lines so I can use them as a guild to cut the hole out of the center.  I have draw on the wrong side before for it is white and both sides is white. But the side you wish people to see is more finer that the back side
