by posers thirst for memory and processor speed?
I'm about ready to sling my pc through the wall trying to setup a scene with more than a naked v4 in it.. yeah I know its time to bite the bullet and upgrade the old pc but damn you shouldnt have to buy a new pc every year just to use current software.. I'm using P6 but may have to go back to 4 pro pak just to do somthing besides pinups..  ok I'm done venting.. thanks for listening....... lol

onnetz - Calm down, take a deep breath, count to ten, then throw the damn thing through the window!!
No seriously, what specs do you have, just doing a basic scene shouldn't cause that many problems, unless your pc really is old.

onnetz ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 6:11 AM

well the desktop isnt too bad with a 1.7 processor and 512 ddr ram but with a wife and three teenagers, getting to it is a chore in itself...lol My pc is a laptop with a 1.2 processor and 256 of ram.... They are both almost 5 yrs old.. so yeah, getting a new pc is long overdue....

onnetz - I think the main issue here is memory. I have 1GB, but even though I rarely have memory issues with Poser, I know another 1GB would be ideal. If you can't afford a new pc or a major upgrade, try & buy some more memory, you should notice a big improvement.

onnetz ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 6:28 AM

yeah.. the motherboard on the desktop only allows for up to 1gb... It wouldnt bother me so much if it was just rendering time but just navigating around the interface can be a pain.. Memory for the laptop is out of the question but I may have to do it for the desktop....
Dont laugh too hard but a Poser lite would be nice.. somthing without all the bells and whistles.. or maybe split it into seperate programs.. like that will ever happen..... lol
oh well.. pinups are nice eye candy..... :-)

onnetz - I guess you've got an excuse to just render pinups then!!

onnetz ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 6:51 AM

lol. yeah.. but I think my kids are beginning to wonder about me.. my daughter asked me the other day "are you playing with naked ladies on the computer again??".. lmao

""are you playing with naked ladies on the computer again??".. "
onnetz - Sounds bad doesn't it, but we artists understand, LOL!!

Darboshanski ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 7:15 AM

Believe I feel your pain....well at least I did until a few months ago when I got a new PC. But I saved, ebayed a few unwanted coins out of my collection and other items, didn't buy any poser stuff and squeezed any extra change I had to buy the new PC.

I went from a AMD Athlon XP 1700 with one gig of ram to a AMD dual core with 2 gigs of ram and the latest hardware (AM2), but of course we know how long the latest hardware STAYS the latest hardware.

My kids say the same thing, my daughter will walk into my office and see me on the PC with poser open and say, "Playing with digital Barbie again Dad?"  My oldest, when he's home on leave, just shakes his head when goes by my office. My wife? Actually she gives me less of hard time. She finds the whole 3D art thing fascinating but she does wonder where some artist get their ideas about how women should look. She will look at the galleries with me and every so often she'll see an image of a rather overly endowed woman and say, My gosh look at the jugs on that one! I see back problems in her future..LOL!" Basically, my wife knows that if I'm sitting on the PC playing with poser I'm not out getting into trouble...LOL!!

It would be interesting to hear from other poser nuts like ourselves and what our families think about our hobby.

Sealtm2 - I work nights, so my main work with the Poser ladies is done during the day when no one can see, LOL!!
BTW, your avatar gave me a chuckle!

I thought my avatar was pretty funny myself. At the bottom of the poster it says, " Issued by the lard information council." LOL!!

The other day I created a nipple ring prop and was rendering up close to see how it looked.. right in the middle of rendering the kids came home.. that was a fun one to explain....lol
In the last week or so my wife has become interested in Poser.. Once that ball starts rolling I may never get a chance to get on the pc again..... lol

onnetz: what hair do you use in your scenes? FWIW even though I do most of my rendering in Carrara 5 Pro (rendering in P6 is tooooooooo sloooooooooooow) but even there I still find that the more complex the hair the slower the render times.

Likewise your lighting setup - try looking up references from the photography guys on lighting setups with main, fill and back lights only as some of the free & bought lightsets can load in 20 or more light sources.

Also, when changing from one light rig to another, use the python script to delete all lights as they often 'hang around' clogging things up when you think you've loaded a new set.

Other than that and as much ram as your motherboard can take...time to upgrade I'm afraid...

Hope the suggestions help...M

onnetz ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 8:50 AM

Well, like I said.. its not the rendering time thats getting me.. its things like going from poses to figures in the library can take a minute or two.. the worst is after an image is rendered and clicking back onto preview can take a couple minutes.. forget about trying to cancel once a render starts.. If I have too much going on in the scene than just switching cameras will lock it up..... like you said.. time to upgrade..

onnetz - Also, Poser 7 renders faster & does seem to have better memory management, try & get your hands on this version if you can. Martin's right about the hair, certain ones are a real pain to render, so many layers & all that transparency!
So now your wife may be getting into it, if your kids do as well your Poser days could be numbered mate, LOL!!

stormchaser ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 8:54 AM

Also, do your figures use large texture maps, this can be a real resource hog?

onnetz ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 9:05 AM

on my laptop I have the textures resized to 25% of the original.. that goes for clothing and props as well..... that helps tremendously..  I still have the same problems even with a bald V4.. lol
I should setup the desktop to run as a slave for my laptop...... :-)

How dare you tempt me with more software..... lol
although I have to admit that I've been very curious about it..  Either way I still need to get a new pc before I put any more programs on the old one..... :-)

I have two computers. One is a 2.1 ghz amd64 with 4 gigs of ram. The other a 2.4ghz amd64 dual core with 2 gigs of ram. I still have memory problems. Poser is a memory hog. My wife always walks by and say "you playing with paper dolls and making smut again huh" lolllllllllllllll

I was severely limited until recently.

I was using Poser on a laptop (1.8 gig Pentium III processor, 512mb of DDR ram, and a 40 gig hard drive).  I could manage so-so for what I was using poser for, but sometimes it took hours to do a simple 1 figure render without a background. I could do minimum raytracing...3 or less, but nothing large.

Then that laptop broke down and I was back on my 6 year old desktop that only had a 1 gig process with 384mb of SDRam.  Now that was a PITA!  I discovered that I couldn't use raytraying. That I had to go and resize all of my textures to no larger than 1024 on the longest side, and that I had to make 90% or more of the scene invisible and make dozens of renders and then piece it all tegether in my graphic program.

I now have a nice shiney new computer and I am loving it! I can do raytracing and all kinds of things. Even a render taking 30 minutes now seems ultra speedy to me!

I almost started a thread like this. Often, I have ideas, but good old Poser simply can't muster the muscle to do them. I have a Pentium 4, 3.4 ghz, 2 gigs of RAM and a 128 gig video card. Poser 4, 5 , 6 and 7. Argh! It's frustrating. We are limited by our software.

anxcon ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2007 at 11:38 PM

2.6ghz core 2 duo overclocked to 3.0ghz (:  2GB ram, and enough HD space to store prolly a full uncompressed video lol

my limit is not enough time in the day......play a game.....play with poser/carrara......back n forth......

sad thing is i can't find any games that strain my video card :(

/end bragging =P
