Subject: Renderosity prohibits direct links to freebies?

Attached Link: Sorry ... can't post FREE stuff here anymore

I've been reading the post in the Poser forum that I think is saying that you can't post direct links to freebies in the forums without Rendo testing and approval first (via the Freestuff Forum). Here's a quote from the Freestuff Forum Mod: "...what I meant to say and failed, was dont post direct dl links to items that have not been approved thru the Rendo freestuff area." I'm I understanding this right? What do y'all think about this? The Poser folks sure aren't liking it much! Best; Dan

Well, I read it and didnt like it either. Not a well tought out idea that one. But its their loss, not mine if I cant give you a link to my freestuff. I couldent care less if my models are tested or not by R' osity. I just stop posting to this forum. And I just cant stand the way the freestuff section here are with me hosting all, even the previews, so I wont post any thing there either. Its sad actually.

From what I remember there have been several instances where people have posted other users textures. I think one original author had even signed an unmapped portion of the vicki texture and the thief had not even bothered to erase the sig.

I've had my own freebies show up as submitted by someone else on other sites. That's one of the reasons I don't formally post a lot of free stuff here or anywhere. Since the only thing I get out of it is recognition its a big deal when someone else gets credit. In the case of the other site the user got membership to the site and access to other peoples models. It was essentially as if the fellow had stolen money from me because he got value from my work.

If you post Battlestar, Lord of the Rings, Spiderman, or a host of other fan or free items with recognizable trademarks you open yourself and Renderosity up to serious legal action from people with deep pockets. If you post and download nude teen or infant textures you have comitted a felony in the state where Renderosity resides. Is it such a big deal that Renderosity checks what you post to see that it isn't stolen or illegal?

So does this supposed to mean I have to upload my espresso cup to the renderosity freestuff area first eventhough I am the original author of it? Eventhough I want to make it free to the Bryce forum, but eventually charge for it eventually to everyone else?

Zhann ( ) posted Sun, 22 April 2007 at 10:24 PM

All freestuff has to be uploaded to the freestuff section and/or the freestuff 'forum', so that it may be tested as well as the link. This is evidently a new policy, and the forums will be policed for freestuff links, so no one can bypass Rosity's testing policy.... one more thing to slow things down.

Hrm, Reading the Poser forum it sounds all confusing. But you made it clear. Thanks Zhann!

I'll probably not post any freebies here for a while until I get things on my end ready. I hope by then the effort to post a freebie doesn't get bogged down with bureaucracy, because that just kills the community spirit. Anyway, if I mess up, I'll probably rely on you or Agent Smith to catch my error before those Renderosity link police do :-)

I'll have to scan through this and find out if this is a site-wide Admin decision or if it is just a Poser Moderator(s) deal......

Okay, not seen anything that would prevent you (or me from allowing you ) to keep posting your freestuff links here in the Bryce Forum.

So far it looks like its the decision of the Moderators. (I believe)

But, I understand the idea, Renderosity just would like to have more freestuff providers go ahead and make a space for their item in the official freestuff area so more people will see it, is all. Good for the site, gets even more people involved in sharing, etc.

No matter for me, that's what I had already decided to do anyway. I want as many people as possible to download my crud, er content.

AS & Zhann:

Hang on! I don't get it.
You can't post links to free stuff?
You can't upload freestuff to the Rend? - that stopped years ago.
Rendo have to test your stuff?
Rendo doesn't want my freebies?
I have to remove my links and freebies?

Come-on guys! You're supposed to know what's going on. Spell it out for us, for god'sake!

If I can't post link on the Rend to my stuff, I'll delete the link from my site to the Rend.

Lol, yeah a little confusing at first glance.

Bryce Forum - business as usual.
Poser Forum - ask and see, I haven't looked in there yet.

Free Stuff Section - business as usual.

Free Stuff Forum - post links to free items that are in your Free Stuff section, here at Renderosity.
*No, not hosted at Renderosity, just any item, like normal.

We have always tested any pending item going into the Free Stuff area. I "test" the Bryce items, then release them into the main Free Stuff section. Meaning I check to see if the download works, if it opens into Bryce as it should, has no viruses, and isn't stolen form someone else.

Like I said, I haven't found ANY staff communication that this is a site-wide rule.

But, one of the Poser Moderators is also the Freestuff Forum Moderator, so maybe its just something they are trying out in Poser forum.

So....as you were.  ;o)

From what you have said AS, it  kind of sounds like they want the freestuff forum to relate to the freebies in the same way that the product showcase relates to the marketplace/commercial side... i.e. the freestuff forum is sort of like the advert space for the freebies (the way that. the product showcase is the advert space for commercial things).

Is that what they're trying for?

AS, Thanks! Last night I started to set up an account/participate with other gallery sites... first time I've done that since joining Renderosity. Also since I program, and know ppl interested in financially backing a pet project to make a gallery site similar to Renderosity, last night was the first time I started to seriously consider what it would take to write software that offer the same features as Renderosity. In other words, more competition. But you've put my concerns to rest. I'll just treat the forums here as I've always done. Makes it easier.

I noticed someone placed a suggestion in the suggestion forum to make a freestuff forum, etc. The idea sounds good, but it seems someone else took the idea and went overboard. What I read in the Poser forum was a nightmare. As an artist, anything that stifles creativity or expression is always frowned upon. 1984 and the thought police comes to mind. I can go on and on but this is the impression I get reading the Poser forum. I also noticed the moderator there is also the moderator for the freestuff forum, which then gives the impression of someone doing bullying tactic to strong-arm members with fear and intimidation. But that's the Poser forum.

Oh what a relief! Because if the Poser group has their way, then even the Ivy Generator would have had to gone through red tape, and helping people in a casual manner would be stifled.

whew<  Thank goodness it's not like that.

AS and Zhann - thanks for checking on that. I like to abide by the TOS and I just wanted to be sure it wasn't site wide.
