Hi all,

Vue Esprit 5 here ... somewhat of a newbie but not entirely .... Been playing with terrains. Doing all sort of things in the Terrain editor, but I can't get rid of the jaggy peaks. My goal is to get some nice rolling hills, but this is avoiding me.

Any tips ?

Mayby you check wether you have added a function to the terrain (last icon to the right on the top row of icons). Reset this and see wether it makes a difference.

Thanks, wabe. No, I hadn't noticed that. Having said that - I've spent a few minutes playing with the functions, but still no dramatic improvements.

How about filtering the altitudes? Second icon from top right in the terrain editor.
You'll be asked to choose a filter. from your terrain filters collection, choose "rolling" and see if it gets better.

Have you reset the function and then created a new terrain? I think the terrain editor works always in addition mode (all change is added to the existing). So an improvement probably will only take place for new terrains.

I'm a Vue beginner, but I was looking for info on this very subject last night.  The following link helped me out quite a bit:

I created my own "terrain height map" in Photoshop Elements using the clouds filter and gaussian blur.  I used that in the terrain editor by clicking on the "picture" button.  Then, I clicked "zero edges".  I duplicated the terrain and resized them both just with the x, y, z coordinates.  I've included a copy of the image I made.

I hope this makes sense.  lol!  I don't really know what I am doing, yet!  I hope you find a method that will give you what you want.  :o)

Hey, why not just use the scale tool on your terrain and scale down the height (usually "Z")?

I've since played around with the Paint tab in the Terrain Editor, and noticed that if you click Reset (on the left of the Terrain editor), and then start painting using a soft airbrush, you get nice round hills. Then you can play around with filters if you want a bit of asymmetry.

BTW, that's a cute avatar, is that your pet ?

You're welcome!  I'll have to try the technique you mentioned also.  More control that way.

He's an incredibly sweet and loving dog and he's a Golden Retriever mix.  Not sure what he's mixed with, though.  lol  Do you have pets?

No, because I live in an apartment. If I had a pet, it wouldn't be anything other than a dog. I grew up with Rough Collies (ie "Lassie dogs"), as my Dad used to breed them. But, personally, I'm mad about Golden Retrievers, they have the most beautiful nature :)

I agree about Goldens, although "Lassie dogs" are very beautiful, too.  I had a shepherd/collie mix when I was growing up and he was an awesome dog, too.  :o)  I live in an apartment, as well.  Every city is different.  This is the only place where I live that will let you have a dog any size.  Every other complex restricts dogs to under 35lbs. (he's about 75lbs. right now) or only allows cats.  (I love cats, too, but I can't afford both.)  I just have to take him for walks.  Of course, I got my exercise today giving him a bath.  Whew!

Yes, I think I have got the hilly results I wanted. The best success that I had was with using a soft airbrush in the Paint tab (after havng clicked the Reset button).

More about dogs  --- My (retired) parents (who live in Tasmania) have had collies until very recently. They had two, but one (old) dog passed away just after Christmas, and I think the other dog was very heartbroken because she passed away soon after.  Very sad, but I was speaking to my mother this morning they are hoping to get a 3 year old corgi bitch in the near future, which I was very excited to hear. My mother loves corgis, just like the Queen !!

            Well first I set up an eco system, then I went to photoshop set up an image 1000*1000 with a white background, drew some lines that represent fields, saved the image as a high quality jpeg. Went back to view, click on the density tab, click on the variable density and then right click the sphere chose edit function. This will bring you to the functions editor the desity tab should be highlighted. To the left hand side you will see a white symbol, this enables you to load and image map, look to the bottom slighty to the left. Load the picture created in PS. Then return to the materials editor by pressing ok. The sphere should now have the image you created on it. To the right of the sphere there is the filter function, the default is a slope using this one does not yield the results you want. So right click the filter and chose load filter and load one going the opposite way. Now all you have to do is play with the density and scaling to get the right amout of objects. Hope this helps

@ mathman: I'm sorry to hear about your parents' dogs.  That's the hardest part of having pets, that their life spans, in general, aren't very long.  I hope your parents do get a new little companion to share their love with.  :o)  The Queen does love her corgis, doesn't she?  lol
