Attached Link: Universe Image Creator

a quite potent proggi to make some good looking space and planet sceneries - it's fast, easy and comfotable to use. I recommend the plug-in version, because then you use can all the advantages software packages such as PS, PSP, CorelDraw etc. provide - else you are pretty much limited to the functions the standalone version gives you and that's mainly just the space&planet creation functions... Although I am not sure if it creates planets texture to export....

As far as I remeber I only found one other proggi, that created Planets manually, but was very limited, and thus not very useful...

In any case there some very good tutorials on the net about making planets(textures) and space sceneries manually

You could try Celestia.

The free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions. Celestia runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy.

All movement in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.

Celestia is expandable. Celestia comes with a large catalog of stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. If that's not enough, you can download dozens of easy to install add-ons with more objects.

http://www.shatters.net/celestia/

There is the program and also ad-ons.

See the Screenshot Gallery and Related Sites also.

I have seen it installed and it is a cool program that lets you fly tru space.
You can take screen shots, save etc.

Best of all it is FREE.

Your right I missed the making texture.
But if I remember right it did have lots of images in the program or ad-ons that you could use as textures.
I also thing the USA government has all types of maps too.

Then maybe terragen.
Also do a search here in the free stuff on terragen. I see a TeXpert from http://people.freenet.de/Myth_de/TeXpert.html

http://www.terrasource.net/
There is lots of programs and links at the site.
