THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: WIP - Lantern

A few months ago I posted this WIP concerning ways to make a gritty floor. Then we all discovered the Ivy Generator. I finally found some time to try using IG to cover the floor a bit. Here is the first attempt. What ya'll think?

Current thought is to raise the lantern off the floor, probably on a concrete block, ivy vines on that.

Since the ivy does distract away from the floor, grows along the edge of the floor/wall, I'm tempted to lighten the scene up a bit.

That scene begs for a grave and a tone.....

if yu put the vine on the lamp..the light will have to be burnt out.. time thinggy. have a grave..and have a hand emerging from it grabbing the lamp.
oh..you meant put the vines on a platform. nah..keep it on the grave if ou make one...

Was thinking of placing the lantern on a concrete block like this one. Since the ivy vines can creep and grow, it could grow around and through the concrete block, as well as a bit on the block.

aha.. yup..put the block.a  bit skewered.. buried a bit under. with moss and vines... and the lantern...
ok..so who put that lantern there?

tom271 ( ) posted Sat, 05 May 2007 at 11:26 PM

a good old shovel would be nice.. he he

btw..white light? or a yellowish glow?

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Sun, 06 May 2007 at 1:26 AM

Hrm, a shovel is there, and an axe, some chains too. The image might be too dark to see those things clearly.

It's got both white and yellow light spheres in the lantern. One on top of the other. A flame material (primordial flame) is over the lights, which gives that light it's current look. The glass is the cloudy glass material.

Here's wiith a concrete block and the full growth of ivy. It seems I will add another block to see how it looks, probably move the axe infront of the shovel, and add a few plant pots.  Maybe brick walls instead of wood ones?

erosiaart ( ) posted Sun, 06 May 2007 at 3:40 AM

liek the wood. make the block dirty... too clean...

tom271 ( ) posted Sun, 06 May 2007 at 2:45 PM

I really , really like this scene very much.....    It is a little too dark for the shovel and chains to be seen...

Superb Comp, love the overall ambience of the scene.

Looks great but ditto the axe and chains, can't see them.
Oh and I agree about dirtying up the block too.

Okay, dirty blocks, more light, flower pots, gardening stuff.... I'll get right on it.

What else might be found here?  I bought a packet of seeds... thinking to scan and place, but might not fit in this.

Maybe if I found an old boot object..... *hint   *hint

The latest with some flower pots and more light.  This is getting close to finishing up.  What ya'll think?

tom271 ( ) posted Mon, 07 May 2007 at 7:02 PM

I like it very much....  It looks like someones corner of his yard....   I wonder if a chainlink fence would add to the scene...

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Mon, 07 May 2007 at 7:08 PM

Hrm, I could try it... but I'll want to hide a background behind it... maybe bushes and stuff.
There's also another type of fence... I don't know the name of it, looks like a cross-hatch pattern.... almost a weave, a middle part is left open.... I don't find it even in a google search. Anyway, I'll try a fence for fun.

i like it..so far.
still think..dirty those damn blocks and pots..looks too clean to be there. even broken pots have abit of dirt on them. can't you fidddle aroudn wit the mat a bit? or add globs of dirt on them?

tom271 ( ) posted Tue, 08 May 2007 at 4:38 PM

I wish I had my D drive working... I have a chain link image with an alpha channel....   I believe CriptoJoe has one....

I am not sure where I found this but I think you could tweak it for both texture and alpha with a bit of work. If anyone recognizes it please say where from.

But will ivy grow on that? Or will it need an actual object to grow right?  I could Solidworks the thing out to try.... But there's another fence that might look nice with ivy... I made it for my Wine and Cheese image... (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1342007&member)  On second thought, though, it's a bit hard to see in that one... I'll have to dig up the object i guess.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Tue, 08 May 2007 at 8:31 PM

I don't think ivy will grow on it (or more specifically, through it.) I think you need actual geometry for that.

Here's a small image of that fence I was mentioning. No idea what's the name of these... but I find them a lot in restaurants too. The Olive Garden here puts them on their ceilings. I'm sure ivy would look good on this.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Wed, 09 May 2007 at 10:21 PM

I always refer to them as a simple lattice.

Yeah, lattice work fencing.  Looking good, agree about more dirt though.

Another weekend.. where's the latest. Just messed around with the pots, added dirt to the floor. Next to work on the wall (on the right) and possibly those concrete blocks. The blocks are now with Zhann's lichen mats. Very useful mats. The dirt is from AgentSmith.
