Hi,

Does anyone have any hints or tips how to make holes in a terrain for instance to put a cave inside a mountain?

Thanks
Jon

I'd do it with a boolean difference, probably the easiest way to make that.

Yeah that is what I thought, I created a rock, thought it was quite a natural shape, used boolean difference and the landscape dissapeared but not the rock, I tried putting the landscape above and below the rock but still the rock remained???

For boolean difference it is important that Vue knows which one the main object is and which one the cutter is. I always do it with keyboard shortcuts and mouse so you cant do it wrong. Here's what i do:

  1. Place the "cutter" object (a cube or whatever) into the terrain just how you want it to cut out of the terrain.

  2. select your main object (terrain!) in the world browser with the mouse so its highlighted.

  3. hold "CTRL" and select the cutter (the cube), still hold CTRL.

  4. While still holding CTRAL you press and hold shift and now "D".

  5. Done, you should now see the terrain with the cube cut out.

That's a good way to do it.  Here's another...

In the World Browser (the list of objects in your scene: bottom right corner of screen)
click the object to be cut then press 'shift' and click the cutter.  Then Ctrl+shift+D, or choose from menu.

To use this method it is best to have the objects next to each other in the W/Browser.
If you have anything listed between them it/they will also be selected when you.
 shift- click.

Objects can be moved in the browser by L-click and drag to where you want it to be in the list.

Hi,

Thanks for the help everyone, I am having really trouble with this I have managed to do it but not quite the effect I was expecting, basically, I want to create the inside of a cave at sea where you look at onto the sea from the cave, now with the camera on the outside no problems, can see the hole, but move the camera inside and the terrain vanishes ???

Any ideas.

Cheers
Jon

The problem is that terrain objects are actually hollow...so you'd need something behind it as well.
