THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Bryce 5.01 on Mac OS X 10.4.9?

mystic_fm ( ) posted Mon, 21 May 2007 at 6:09 AM · edited Sat, 23 November 2024 at 10:46 PM

File Open/Save dialogs don't show up when I run Bryce 5.01 on my Intel MacBook Pro (under Mac OS X Tiger).  It's like they are hidden underneath the main window (I say this because I can catch brief peeks at them if I switch apps using Command-Tab, although I still cannot make use of the dialogs in this way).  I can still open Bryce scenes by double-clicking them in the Finder, but I cannot specify file save locations from within Bryce (for example), which is the real problem.  Has anyone else encountered this problem and/or found a solution for it?

Oh yeah - quite a well known problem and I know of no workaround. This was fixed with Bryce 5.5. I've never tried this but I understand you can run PC B501 under BootCamp. HTH; Dan

Ah, I see.  Thanks much for the info.

It's too bad that material animation (which I am depending upon for my current project) is broken in Bryce 6, or I'd consider upgrading for this purpose.  At least I can continue to use Bryce 5 on my PC for now ... I'm just trying to migrate more of my work over to the Mac (now that I've got one), and was hoping to make Bryce one of those programs.

Now that Bryce 5.5 is freely downloadable, I guess this will finally allow me to run Bryce on my Intel MacBook Pro?  (Under Rosetta, of course ... can't have everything for free.)  Are there any other problems or warnings I should know about before I spend the time downloading and installing this?

EDIT: Looks like I may have spoke too soon.  Something in the "Bryce 5.5 for free" thread led me to believe that the Mac version was also available, but I can't find it, so perhaps not.  :(

Perhaps you have spoken too soon again because a simple search for the word "Bryce" on download.com already brought it up.

Oh, you're right ... thank goodness!  What threw me was that, when I clicked on "Design Tools" as originally instructed, it wasn't shown there ... and moreover, only Windows OSes were shown in the filter box.

Mystic - I haven't used 5.5 much on my MacPro but so far I haven't found any glaring problems. OS menu items do work. The only real problem is how slow rendering is under Rosette, made worse by the lack of multi CPU support.

Thanks Dan!  I did install it today, and I'm finding everything you said to be exactly true for me as well.  Rendering on my 2.33 Ghz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro is only slightly above half of the speed of my HP Windows laptop with a 2.0 Ghz Core Duo (on the exact same scene).  So I'd evaluate the relative, cycle-for-cycle performance to be cut by up to 70% by Rosetta.
All the same, the performance seems good enough to allow me to do some scene design and modeling on my Mac, and that's a good thing, since that's the machine where both Photoshop and my video editing software reside.  I'll be doing network rendering when the time comes for lengthy final renders anyway, so both machines will get to participate.
