Try this tutorial. It is actually talking about displacement maps but the same blender node and mask set up can be applied to what you want to do.Hope that helps.
Generally you plug your transparency mask into the specular (Specular, Glossy, Blinn) node as well. Whichever channel on that node controls the brightness. Sometimes its called Specular_Value, sometimes its called Reflectivity.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Hi all,
Using Poser 6, I'd like to apply a transparency map I'm using as a mask to limit the effect of the nodes I have as inputs to the alternative specular value to just the "white" area of the transparency map. Does anyone know how to do that?
