Yeppers, that's what I heard too. It was way before my time though, hehe
I use Poser to play "dress up dolly" and to make "pretty pictures" :)
"It is good to see ourselves as
others see us. Try as we may, we are never
able to know ourselves fully as we
are, especially the evil side of us.
This we can do only if we are not
angry with our critics but will take in good
heart whatever they might have to
say." - Ghandi
I use the brute force of computational power to do what my little camera does.
However, I think my virtual subjects are more fantasy-like than my real-life subjects ( except for my Doll Boy, who's always nice-looking even in real life).
Let us know when you feel completely addicted to using Poser. I know I am.

I use Poser mainly as a reference for my watercolor paintings. I posted several examples of the Poser image and the corresponding watercolor in my gallery(latest example in the link above). (Although I can see how easily one can turn into a CG addict and just create virtual art for its own sake)"I paint that which comes from the imagination or from dreams,
or from an unconscious drive. I photograph the things that I do not
wish to paint, the things which already have an
existence."

Anime-style word ballon: "The image kind of reminds me of what DAZ Studio can do in toon render mode, and also what Material Room toon-type black and white shaders can do. The darn software seem intent on making us Human artists obsolete. Let's fight back !!"
( that was me being a little bit surreal)

Anyone else had this discovery long after they bought poser?
Yes That was the original purpose of Poser, In my community I have spoken with several traditional form artists showing them Poser and they are ultimately impressed with its use for exactly that purpose. As for being a dummy, no! Many traditional artists dont even look at digital medium for an augmentation to their skills, But once introduced they definately feel it is an excellant referance tool.

Well, I've used Poser the past as a basis for pencil work. :) Don't do that so much these days (these days I'm more into 2D/3D hybrids using Painter, Photoshop, etc.), but Poser can still help when experimenting with ways to visualize a scene before hitting the old drawing board. Sometimes just kicking back with the pencils does make a nice change :)
Great comments guys. I'm actually quite happy that i found this use. Now i don't even need to spend no more money on clothes and stuff. I can just use poser for posing, and gettting different camera angles. I'll draw it on my notebook with a real pen.. make minor changes and give personality... clothe the character with any kind of fashion i can think of. Also i'll use Vue and the tons of cars and objects i bought to give me a refeence for cars. I have never been able to make vehicles that well. But i can learn now. Hurray! AND all the poses i had bought for poser andthought were useless, now have a use!!! I'll use them all. i bought so many pose packages.
"...I can just use poser for posing, and getting different camera angles..."
Yeah, that is a great use. Hardly anyone ever mentions that when this subject comes up. But then again I guess it's pretty obvious, altho I'm (in)famous for overlooking the obvious, ha ha!
Any pose(s) can be used again and again from different angles, focal lengths, perspectives, distances, etc. Actually, there are lots of uses for this particular portion of Poser, even more if you have something like a Design Master projector or some such.

In addition to the pose itself (from different POV) Poser is also usefull for lighting - both for position of light and shadow on the figure and cast shadows on the surrondings. Also, Artists always liked to use draping on the figures or in the background, and I find the cloth room great for that. I used poser to help me with the pose, the light/shdows and the draping in the link above."I paint that which comes from the imagination or from dreams,
or from an unconscious drive. I photograph the things that I do not
wish to paint, the things which already have an
existence."

I've used poser for some time to do illustrations... mainly as discussed here to arrange a scene, scaling, perspective. Good tool to get things worked out quickly on deadlines.
This was for an article aboud dads and sons. The pen was created in Carrara... rest done with photoshop and some painter work.
