Subject: OT but Poser related.....trueSpace5.2 is retiring!

Attached Link: Caligari home page; trueSpace

I have a license for trueSpace 5.2. I have not been using this software.

However, when I tried it and purchased under a special 3D-World offer a few years ago, I really liked the software.

They are now up to version 7.5 and you can get it with VRay!

Caligari is offering an upgrade to 7.5 without VRay for $395 with 22 DVDs of training.

The price for that same package, with VRay.......about $650.00 total (downloadable)

This is not a program into which one can move full Poser scenes with dynamic hair and cloth and shaders, and then light and render. You can move Poser assets into trueSpace and continue from there. It's also a fne modeller, with of course .obj export.

It appears that the animation tools are better than Poser, but I am not sure how much so.

They have a trial version.

Still, with Max at $3500 and Maya at $7000, this is tempting.

Anyone have 7.5 with VRay and can you give feedback?

From what I understand, the Vray version they use is not nearly as robust as the one that plugs into Max.

thank god.. that was the worst of the tS versions... could never get it to run for more than a few minutes before it crashed... (the same machine runs 4.3 and 6.6 smooth as silk as well as Posers 5/6/7, Maya PLE, XSI etc)

I've got Ts6.6 and never upgraded to v7. I hardly ever import poser stuff into Ts, Ts simply becomes very slow on my machine when doing so.

But I have made stuff in Ts that I used in Poser and that works well.

Having said that, I still prefer using Cinema4D any time. Lightning fast and much more powerful then Ts.

Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

I have it......but haven't had a chance to really play with it just yet. Caligari is supposed to be in talks with eFrontier about better support, so maybe there is hope there. The little bit I have done is both confusing and impressive.

The new version is based on a brand new architecture, and it seems pretty solid.  They just don't have all of the tools ported, so now you kind of have to switch between old and new workspaces.  When they get that fixed and make it play nice with Poser I'll be much happier with it.  The two coolest new features are the near photorealistic preview and mixing dynamic and keyframed animations.  So, yeah, I hope they can work something out with ef.  Is this a rumour or just wishful thinking?

I remember reading it, and I -think- it was either a Calligari or EF newsletter....not a solid statement, but a 'exploring to see' kind of thing. I can't find the bloody thing, so I have to say 'rumour'.....

'plays well with Poser'..................if that means "able to import models from Poser, then you are already there. If it means import models with rigging, shaders/textures, i don't think so.

My major concern is this: no dynamic cloth. How can you have a serious app for animation with no dynamic cloth sym.  I also don't really know if they have dynamic hair sym, i suspect not. "Grow" hair, yes, but simulate gravity and other forces, as Poser does...I don't think so.

It was in one of the Q/A's you see from Caligari; the exact quote was 'investigating better integration with Poser'. And it was a response to importing Poser animations into TS. For whatever its worth. Maybe the hair/cloth dynamics is a potential plugin, like the gamepak system is....one day, with enough people using TS as their end stage

I was surprised, for the sheer number of modeling tools and just about everything else, by the things missing from TS currently.  Dynamic cloth and hair need addressed immediately, but even blender can do advanced fluids now.  I'd hate to have to make something like an apocalyptic flood or lava flow in TS from the tools I'm seeing.  Then again, it was the car hitting the ragdoll that made me buy it :)
