Subject: vicky2.....not enough ram to render

Ghostwtr ( ) posted Tue, 22 May 2001 at 1:25 AM ยท edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 2:43 PM

Just bought Vicky 2. I have 384Ram/600Pentium3/ yet Vicky 2 won't render with the hires map , the machine locks up. I have a whole extra seperate 13Gig hardrive doing nada. Does anyone know of software that might use this drive to simulate a virtual ram drive (remember DOS) that might meet Poser's needs? Otherwise I guess my only option is to buy more ram. Comments? Advise? mahalo, john

Lower the resolution of the maps ;-)

I can't imagine having problems with 384megs of RAM. Are you sure this isn't something else? Windows automatically DOES use your hard disk for Virtual Memory, but you could set windows to use your free drive for it to gain more. I don't know what OS you're using, but Windows 95/98/ME is pretty bad at managing memory and doesn't free it up well after running programs. A utility such as Ram Booster is a must when using 3D programs to keep memory free. This is a sharware program available at most of the sites. Or, you could just use Win2000 and everything works as it's supposed to!

Not a ram problem, it is your virtual memory management. Though I don't have Vik2 yet, with only 32Mb of RAM in Win95 (stop snickering), I can render a scene with several Vicky1 figures, each with 2500x2500 maps. By default, Windows uses the free space on your C: drive for Virtual Memory. If you cannot keep 500Mb of space free on that drive then you should consider moving your virtual memory to the other drive with more space. Damned if I can remember how to do that though, which, of course, was your original question.

People also have mentioned that having a bunch of unused texture maps loaded in memory also bogs things up. I set my preferred state to open without any figure in the window, so Poser doesn't load those maps. Open your Vicky and load the hi res map, transmap and bump. Make sure they are the only ones assigned to the figure parts. Save your figure and close Poser. When you reopen Poser and your Vicky figure, they should be the only maps loaded. If it still doesn't render, got to be some system setting.

Side note: also check the POser directory for tmp files which can get to be quite huge and take up HD space.. just delete them... after a couple of crashes with poser.. I was going to redo the rsr.. and found 16 Meg of tmp files sitting there.. makes you wonder at times na? Cheers

try maxmem by axion. Or use ctrl-alt-del and see how many things are open at one time.

In summary: 1.Lower the resolution (I assume Jeff means at the render options box altho I didn't check) 2.Try "RAM booster." 3.Keep more than 500mb free More than 10gigs is free on my C drive. 4.Use Window "properties" to switch wap drives (OG question) 5.Fly the unused texture. I do that already. 6.Check and delete .tmp files 7.Use Maxmem. Got "Memmax" which is not that useful, I'll try the other. 8. I guess reducing the size of the map might also help? Mahalo all ... john
