Subject: A quick riddle for ye...

Been playing round with a concept I've been trying to do for years, and only just getting to a point where I'm happy to start sharing it... it's basically taking real photos and comping in CG elements, but giving the CG enough of an edge that it blends in without being obvious. So here's the riddle:

Which of the elements in this image are CG, and which are real-world? No prizes, no world-shattering revelations, just a bit of fun, and a chance to see if it looks as good to other people as it does to me. :)

My first guess would be the curtain.

Quote - My first guess would be the curtain.

That's what I was thinking because of the speckles that have been added throughout the whole image....kind of camaflage?

The glass on the table is cg...also the purple thingy.

Nance ( ) posted Thu, 05 July 2007 at 12:06 AM

glass a tad too crisp & clean and the sword's shadow looks a bit too hard edged,  so I'd guess those two,  but well done!

Well it looks as good to me. Everything looks real, so my guess is... Everything is CG, but the table, the bottles in the window and the outdoors?

Hmm... some interesting answers there. I wish I could claim my abilities with CG and modelling were good enough to manage to create the whole scene in CG, but sadly, I can't quite big myself up THAT much.

Nance and geep are actually the closest to the right answer here - only the sword is CG. It's from Victoria Year 3 by Uzilite, which I got free on a cover disc of 3D World some time ago. I changed the materials on the metal areas, making the blade chrome and the hilt area brushed metal (thanks to bagginsbill for his tips on this over at runtimedna in the node cult area).

I will get round at some point to doing a full tutorial on how I worked the composite, from taking the reference imagery through to the lighting and so on. Whilst I am very happy with the results, I am also quite happy to point out that, as ever, I stand on the shoulders of giants: without bagginsbill's knowledge of materials nodes, and face_off's great tutorials for advanced IBL, then this project wouldn't look nearly as good as it does.

To respond to a few comments: whilst not done as 'camouflage' as such, the noise was added in over the top of both photo and CG layers in order to give a sense of unity to the picture. There was already some noise in the photo, due to using the photo option on my camcorder (don't own a digital camera yet), and attempts to remove the noise deteriorated the overall clarity of the picture, so I decided it was easier to add more noise instead.

The 'purple thing' is actually the base of another of those glasses - they're a two part plastic tumbler, with removeable bases to allow for ease of stacking in your cupboard.

Again, thanks for responding, and I look forward to putting my next image up in the near future. :)

Nice work Jon and thanks for the response to let us know the "facts."

Looking forward to your next pic.

BTW - Better close that window, it looks like it's going to rain. ... ;=]
