Subject: Photo Walks

I really like walking and taking photo's.  I want to join a group for walking and to take photo's along the way.  The walking groups  I have appraoched frown "BIG" time when I stop every few minutes to take a photo.  Does anyone know of groups in the south east of England that do both?  Or would any one like to meet up say once a mounth and join me on some walks?

Guess a walking group is a walking group...nothing more!

PeeWee05 ( ) posted Sun, 15 July 2007 at 3:00 PM

LOL - I would also suspect that the point of a walking group is to walk not stop.

Fred where about do you stay? Richard, Akpe and I are going on another outing in a month or so and you would be very welsome to join.

Yes lol I think even my family members get fed up with me stopping every time I see something worth taking a shot of... Doing this with fellow photographers is much more fun.. If we can plan a UK RR group and there is some notice I will always be happy to turn up..

Fred, you will be amazed at how many photographers spend hours for that one special shot!...unless its a snapshot...not good for walking groups :-)

That is why I would like to get a group together from here .  Like minded photographers who also like to walk.  I find the best photo's are always miles from any roads towns etc,

I'm with Danny on this one - I'd love to join in and would be prepared to travel down south, up north or wherever in the UK, as long as a little notice was given so I could arrange things first.

How does August Bank Holiday weekend sound?  Saturday or Sunday 25th/26th No work on Monday.  I know of a few walks around here.  All circular about 6-9 miles all with at least one country pub on route.  Mail me if interested I can find out about local hotels etc.

I agree with some of the comments here - a walking group is just that and in many instances I wonder if they miss some of the beauty by never stopping to admire an area.
My daughter and family are like that,no sooner get to a beauty spot than they want to move on.
luckily my wife is the opposite and many times on walks we stop and whilst I shoot the photos she is happy to enjoy the countryside, mountains or fresh air depending on our location.
Even then I would at times like to stay longer at a location just for the right light but think I am pushing my luck.
If you cant get a group together then do it alone.I have yet to do a walk were quite some time is spent in conversation with people along the way.
Good luck with the group but even if you get no offers then do it alone, quite amazing how you will see things that would never have interested you before.
There maybe a local camera club,it wouldn't be for me but it may appeal to you.

I'm all for getting a few of us together over the bank holiday weekend David, but not sure how many will be available - many people go away with their families at that time.

I have no plans at the moment, so if we can get a few of us Brit members to say yes, then you can count me in.

BTW - where exactly is "here" I know you're down south somewhere, but I could do with knowing exactly where to potentially arrange an overnight stop somewhere.

Or perhaps we could arrange somewhere more mid country to make it easier for those up north to travel (I'm easy with travelling.....I'm used to driving the full breadth of Germany and then the full length of UK without more than an hour's break on the ferry - so driving any distance doesn't phase me, but I know it does for some!!

Perhaps people could give an indication here in this thread if they are interested rather than private email - this way, some people may be more encouraged to come along if they can see who has already said yes??

Just my two-penneth worth here.

Sorry for the delay in replying - been very ill and still not on top form (hence I've not been active in the galleries for a couple of days!)

Here is Sandhurst Berkshire.  Very near the Sandhurst Army Training College.  It's right on the border of Berkshire, Hampshire, and Surrey.  In fact there is a big round-a-bout that goes through all 3 counties.  I have books on pub walks including some very beautiful scenery for Hampshire and Surrey and will get one for Birkshire.  There are many interesting places to visit in the area including Royal Ascot Race Course and Windsor Castle, Farnham Keep and Guildford Castle.

Ahhh.... Guildford, Surrey - I remember it well from my Army basic training all those eons ago!!!

Sounds like a cool idea to me - so let's see who else is up for it??

I am the worlds's worst traveller! I could not travel down to Surrey :-( David your idea is an excellent one. Just to let you know, an invitation to you all to perhaps consider having a walk in Robin Hood's Bay.... sometime. It would be wonderful to meet up with other members. I've been watching this with interest.

A great idea to meet up with like minded people to have a photo shoot.

My thoughts:
Too much walking and not enough photography     -        6-9 miles
I know I would probably cover this if out shooting for a day but I think this distance will at least double if you're going to be taking photographs along the way. A bit like dog miles you won't be sticking to the track but zig zagging here and there to take photographs. Average speed of 1 or 2 miles an hour setting up shots waiting for others to set up shots etc. and its gonna be a long day.

Nothing has been said about the destination what type of shots are there. What variety of shots etc etc etc  Are there opportunities to join and leave for part of the walk etc. Are there shooting opportunities no matter what the weather ?

I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from taking part, I wish you well, but this would not be for me. I am only putting my thoughts down for your consideration because there maybe others thinking the same as me, who would like to meet up but this would be just too much for.

Thanks Richard for your input and I have to admit to being a little faint at the prospect of up to 9 miles!!

I suffer with a bad back and this can normally be a bit of a problem when walking or standing for too long.

I don't really care where we go, but it would be nice to be able to stop and rest (say at a pub for lunch LOL!!) along the way or deviate slightly if we became tired - again, I'm pretty easy and self-sufficient enough to be able to just wander off on my own, providing I knew where I was and had a map of the area to hand - it would be fun finding my way back to a pre-arranged rendevous!!

Perhaps if some of these details were ironed out, you may reconsider in joining us perhaps???  (Creep, creep - first beer on me if you do!!)

Yes I would agree or it would be the same when I go with the family..  Some lovely beauty spot and a  chat  with pub lunch was more my style..  With emphasis on the photoraphy rather than the walk

All walks can be shorten or we can just travel by cars to local beauty spots.  There are many in the area, From historical to areas of outstanding natural beauty.  Plus I don't go anywhere I can't get a decent pint of ale.  Many great country pubs in this area.  I was more wanting to do this to meet some others from this site so we can learn from each other.

Oh well - that's me buggered then David - I have absolutely nothing I can teach anybody around here, so does that mean I can't come??  LOL!

I didn't for one minute think that you would actually make us just walk and walk without being able to take in the scenery and photograph things or stop off for a pint or three....hic!

I think it'd be a great chance to meet some others from RendoLand too.

I would love to join in but none of this 'Oh I know a place, and BTW you all will have to travel miles while I catch a local bus there, NOT COOL' if it'sgonna happen it's gotta be so where that's at least 30 miles for where everyone lives but at the same time offer a it to spend hours on looking stupid in finding the right shooting angle...

Just my thoughts...

I'm pretty open to subject matter as long as it doesn't involve me trying to cox a cow into facing into the sun...

Oh Fred get over it. I'm the one who first met Akpe and opened a walk between us and then too opened up the 'walk' between Rich and Apke.

And have invited many other ppl and spoken in IM about it with other ppl and I am willing to travel to their neck of the woods to see what places they know best.

All I'm saying is this thing can and will turn ugly and fizzle out if we go to places that are 'too' close to people's houses and we are spending over £20 on petrol and train tickets when the person is traveling 2 miles and £1 on petrol... Fair is Fair is all I'm saying.

And there is no sugar coating the truth, basically.

And I was agreeing with Rich in saying that a 9 mile walk is very long. I walk pretty fast and take 30 mins per mile so 9 miles is over 4 hours of fast walking no photo taking. And we all love to look for 'stupid' angles to take photos so 4 hours of walking 1h30min for lunch, 3 hours traveling, that leaves around 2 or 3 hours shooting. Rich Akpe and I took 6 hours to shoot and still could've done more...

Oh this is just getting a little bit frustrating now.

David, your response to Vera's first post was a little harsh and slightly unjustified - I didn't see it as a direct attack at your idea, she was just offering her opinion from previous experience and at the end of the day, we all know that this or any other photo walk will not always appeal to everyone - I'd already stated that perhaps it would be too far down south for some of those up north to travel to - but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

I admit that when I first read Vera's post I thought it may have come across a little blunt, but I re-read it and understood that she was only offering advice and opted not to respond to it - for no other reason than "it didn't affect me" so no need to respond.

But this thread has now got nasty and is going to start leaving a bitter taste in mouths unless it is resolved soon - if Vera did want to come, she certainly won't now and if she didn't her opinion may very well affect the decision of others coming!!

I sit here night after night reading comments and seeing how some people react and how things can get blown out of proportion - may I just ask that everyone takes the time to try and interpret what it is the person commenting is actually trying to say - remembering of course that the emphasis of a whole sentence can be changed from humourous to let's say, sarcastic, merely by the way it is read and which word is emphasised most by the reader - a simple example would be......

I want that sweet!

or

I want that sweet!

Say that sentence placing the emphasis on the underlined word and see how the sentence goes from a statement of preference to a demand!!

We are not always "blessed" with the person commenting underlining their emphasised words or adding smilies, LOL's etc to show they mean something in a light-hearted way - with this in mind, just give them the benefit of the doubt or if you are really concerned by something they have said - IM them - don't bring it to the forum.

I hope this thread can get back on track (no pun intended LOL!) and that we can still get a photo walk organised for the end of next month.

And just in case there is any doubt at all...........

***I LOVE YOU ALL!!!! ***

Thanks Bibby, I'm glad you read it for what it's supposed to be.
I'm sorry if tack isn't my suit.

The South African 'walks' failed because only a handful of us were willing to tavel from city to city so a 'in between' place was picked. And that too failed. People are selfish and unsacrificing by nature and all I was trying to say was be mindful and respectful of others, there's got to be give and take.

I don't mind harsh comments or crit but a personal attack is out.

And so am I...

I hope that last statement was just meant for the walk and not from R'osity Vera??

I personally wouldn't want to see you leave and I'm sure there are many that would agree with me!

This is why people really need to learn to read between the lines before shooting from the hip to respond - it usually ends up in disaster.

If there is anything I can do to change your mind, please let me know.

Thank's maybe I was too harsh, I was having a bad day.  Sorry if I took it out on you.  My idea was for having a walk near me is I have local knowledge of the area.  I was never going to make anyone walk 9 miles who did not want to.  That the type of distance I walk starting around 9am and finishing around 5pm, with breaks for lunch.  I can take around 30 to 40 photo's on a walk.  If you want to come along you still can and bring the rest of essex with you.  I was more thinking of 2-3 miles or traveling to various spot by car.  As I said I know the local area for about 30 miles around me well.

Thanks Chrissy for being peace maker.
