See Vestmann, we brought you over to the dark side the OT-interaction side and now you have to admit it's fun ;o)

Rodma_Hu - I know we have already spoken about this very issue privately. I understand that you would leave threads open once they'd become brawls, if you were doing the job. That's okay - we all have different approaches. This is, however, how the staff here do things. We have been, in the past, extremely liberal and allowed more or less anything to stay open; and we have been extremely, errr, "strict" I suppose, and not only closed threads at the first sign of sarcasm, but also removed any and all things remotely OT. (I wasn't on staff then, but god I remember those months and they were bloody miserable.)

In short - we make decisions to close threads based on the individual threads and situations in question, being guided by the overall experiences of the past.

I will amend my initial statement for clarity:
We close threads when they have degenerated so far into negativity and personal attacks as to become useless.

As stated quite eloquently already, OT threads such as this have now become DO serve a purpose - they allow the forum posters to kick back a little bit, have a laugh, and get to know each other a little more. Barriers are broken down, information is shared - not about the program, but about each other. (Connie - I didn't realise you weren't a native English speaker! Allow me to congratulate you, because I think your language skills are awesome!)

On the flipside, threads that have become a fight, with people just slinging out insults, rehashing old flame wars and trying to provoke new ones, are not only useless to the community, but actively damaging, in our view and experience.

OK gotta go now and get ready for work. Catch you all later :-)

I must also state that I was surprised to find that English is not Connie's native language, she puts me to shame & I was born & bred on these shores! It still amazes me how some people here & those I've met in life can speak English so well. I quess most learn it from an early age because I understand English is a very hard language to learn if you're not brought up in a country which predominately speaks it.

Thank you :)  I don't find english particularly hard. Building a vocabulary and learning the colloquial phrases often has me running around in circles :)  And Pop culture... About the language thing...

My native tongue is Icelandic but what probably helped me learn english is that we don´t dub movies and TV shows here as is done in many european countries (like France, Germany, Spain etc.). Also I played A LOT of text-input adventure games which forced me to build up a vocabulary...

Connie - So you're actually Croatian. When did you move to the US?
I remember a woman I met  years ago, she was part Italian, part Croatian. She had the most softly spoken & beautiful accent I've ever heard.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Wed, 25 July 2007 at 1:58 PM

Yea, I came from croatia ro California when I was 18, about 20 years ago. I actually grew up on the north coast of Croatia, just 60KM from italian border... so I sort of know a few words italian. There was a large italian minority where I lived, and we visited Italy often (good shopping).
I don't have any italian in me, that I know of, it's all mediterranean (actually Adriatic) areas of Croatia.
My accent is mix of a few Slavic sounds, British English (since that's first english I learned) and Ameriacan English. Most often people hear it but can't place it :), but I'm told it's not a very strong accent.

The only Terry Pratchett book I have read so far is The Unadulterated Cat, which is a very accurate account of cats in real life, as opposed to the sweet things portrayed on greetings cards.

Which reminds me... If pet food manufacturers really wanted to make a cat food that the little buggers actually like, why don't they make grasshopper and mouse flavour?  Or vole and wasp?

Nope. It's part of the solution to a, near 20 year old, text adventure called Humbug. Still available here: http://www.grahamcluley.com/humbug.html

Humbug was a big thing in my bit of the UK in the early '90s. I just used to lurve the ridiculous conversations it gave rise to.
