Hi there, is anyone running Poser on a laptop. Right now I'm still running Poser 5 and thinking of upgrading to 7 as well as getting a new laptop.  The new ones seem to have all of the requirements however I wanted to know if anyone was running it on a laptop and what they are using, what you might recommend???  Any and all advise would be greatly appreciated.

Me. Acer Aspire 5610, Intel Centrino Duo (dual core) T2300, 1 gb ram, 80 gb HD15,4" screen, NVIDIA GeForce

Try to get the biggest HD you find. No matter as big as it be, soon or later you'll need an external device (I have an external 250 gb with external runtimes)

Windows XP recommended (try to flee if you hear 'Vista' or... uninstall it and install XP)

HP Pavilion dv8000, Centrino Duo, 1 GB RAM, 1440x900 widescreen 17", 2x100 GB 7200 RPM HD, nVidia 7400 Go display adapter with 512 Mb dedicated memory.
Windows Media Center, Poser 7. Works fine.

I forgot. Both Poser 6 & 7. Works fine

2-3 year old PBell, 1GB Ram, 100GB-HD, ATI 9600 Video and a mobile 1.8 CPU, runs all versions of Poser just fine.......Steve

Using Poser 7 on an Acer C300 (TABLET pc)
Processor is 1.2GHz, with 1.25 GB of DDR RAM, about 3 years old.
Poser runs ok, rendering takes some time, but I tend to leave it alone and do other things whilst it plays around with that.

If I were to get a new Laptop for this sort of thing, I'd make sure that it came with oodles of RAM, fast SATA disks and a replaceable graphics card (check out 3D magazine this month - it's got some interesting stuff on this)

Make sure that any new laptop has the RAM configured correctly - Acers (like many others) tend to fill all the RAM slots with SODIMMs so that one of them needs to be replaced if you want to upgrade memory.

Mine came with 2 x 256MB of RAM originally, so when I wanted to upgrade to 1GB, I had to remove one SODIMM and put in a 1GB card, taking it up to 1.25GB, instead of just adding a 512MB card if the manufacturers had seen fit to include a single 512MB SODIMM instead of 2 256 modules.

Edit.... Do NOT, EVER get a tablet PC if you want things to run smoothly.  The extra software eats memory like no-ones business.
Oh, and as mentioned above, don't touch Vista with a 10 foot pole.  XP Pro is the way to go

I ran Poser 5 and Poser 6 on a Dell Inspiron 8200 1.8 gig processor, 512 DDR ram, and  a 40 gig hard drive for about 2 years.  For the most part it worked ok.  Because of the lights in Poser 5, some basic 1 figure scenes took an hour to render with Firefly, and longer if I was using raytracing.

There were some that I had to render in pieces and put together in post work. 

But what can I say, it was a crappy Dell and I strongly suggest staying away from their stuff.

I run on a Dell Inspiron 9400, with centrino Duo core. I've recently upgraded my RAM from 1gb to 2gb and have really noticed the difference, especially in rendering multi-figure scenes.

 It handles Poser 6 and 7 fine, although it will not preview with the shaders showing in  Poser 7  and there are one or two other issues with the preview view, mostly solved by reducing the texture size for preview rendering. These problems are due to the inadequate graphics card: when I upgrade I will pay more attention to getting a decent one, to solve this and so that I can run Vue6.

Another issue I've had is tiny insects ("thunderbugs", or I've heard then described as "wheat-flies") getting inside the screen. Dell (after some argument) replaced the screen last year, but this summer I've had them in the new one, so I suspect a design problem.

With any computer get Windows XP if you still can, and get the largest HD you can.

Running 5 and 6 as well as D|S and several other graphics packages on an Acer TravelMate 5100 with 1Gb of RAM and bloody well not enough hard drive space.  Can you really ever get too much hard drive space?  It seems that the Poser and Bryce runtimes grow exponentially to the size of the available drive.

I use XP Pro and won't come close to Vista for at least two years...I don't know why I should pay to beta test someone elses software.

I'm saving my small change to have another Gb of RAM installed in September to see if it helps with those pesky out of memory messages.  See above for more details.

It will be hard to find a big name laptop that's not running Vista. Poser and Vista ... well anything and Vista don't mix.

You will need to go with a small PC builder. They are hard to find, grouchy and opinionated. They (we, I) almost always work as a one person shop and build every system as a custom. And NO it's not more expensive than a Dell, dude. Actually I can almost always beat the brand name prices and my system are built clean. No trial ware, no Dell ads built in and no proprietary junk to prevent future upgrades.

I know 3 custom system builders in my town and we all even look the same, like a nerd. No, not the stereotypical "Revenge of the Nerds" nerd.

One of the things I was surprised about, when my brother in law ordered his latest laptop a few weeks ago, was that he could demand that they give him an XP Pro machine even though they said they didn't have any.  But I agree on the custom build.

The only reason I went with a pre-pack laptop was that I could get it "soon" vs. "I'll get to it."  And at over $1200.00 US+, I didn't argue much when he threw in that he could get 24 hour financing.  My payments are around $35.00month and when that's done the payment will go to do some massive work on the system and the wifes desktop.

The usual...as much RAM as can be forced down their throats, the biggest hard drives possible, newer graphic cards.

Poser5 on a G3-series laptop running at 266 mHtz, with under 512M of RAM. Does run a bit slow and cloth simulations take a while, but I've been using it to finish rigging and materials settings on a new set, while I'm stuck at rehearsals.

I run Poser 6 and 7 on my year-old Toshiba Satellite 1.7 CPU dual core with 2 gigs of RAM. I have all the runtimes on an external drive. It was a lifesaver when my main desktop 3.4 P4 single core went down and is just as fast rendering. I hooked my 21 inch monitor, keyboard and mouse to the laptop and was in business!

I've been running Poser on laptops for years (7yrs I think). Currently a HP DV9000 with an AMD Turion X2 TL56, 2 gigs of RAM, Nvidia GeforceGo 7600 - 256 Mb RAM, and 2x100 gig hard drives, WinXP. Poser 5/6 run great, as does Carrara 5Pro, Daz Studio, Vue Infinite (haven't done anything major with it yet), and Hexagon 1. A laptop won't be as fast as an equivalantly priced desktop, but I love being able to "work" just about anywhere :-)

Try to get a machine with discreet video RAM. A graphics card with discreet (not shared) V RAM will really improve interactive performance with any 3D app. 2 Gigs of RAM is also a big plus, and as much disk space as you can afford.

I like small 14”. It is easy to carry.

None of the apps you list are officially supported by Vista so probably not.

P.S. There are 10 count 'um TEN flavors of Vista. It was bad enough when we had to contend with two, XP Pro and Home. TEN! Microsoft has gone off the deep end.

If you were a software developer which one would you be developing for?  .... The correct answer is Linux.

I'm not here to hype up MS and I'm using a desktop as opposed to a laptop for my rendering but so far I haven't had any problems running Poser 7 and Cararra Pro 5 on my Vista machine.

Sorry no as I started out with Poser 7.

Well, got me a Toshiba Satellite X200, and its amazing... of course it will take a bit of time to get everything up and running... Currently partitioning the hard drive so I have  a dual boot system - XP for my rendering software, Poser, Mojoworld, and Bryce and Vista Ultimate as thats what came with the laptop.  I have Intel Core2 Duo Processor T7100 1.8GHz, 2 GB of memory, NVIDIA GeForce 8700, video memory 512MB, 250 GB of hard drive... and I'm so excited.  I just bought the upgrade from Poser 5 to 7 and can't wait to play  :) I'm moving to this from my old faithful Pentium 4 so think I may see a bit of a change in processing  :)  doing a lil happy dance

Thanks so much for everyone's comments and all that you've shared..  I'm with nerd, I can't believe how many versions of Vista there is out there, and I also heard that Microsoft was going to stop selling XP in March 2008.  Not sure if thats just a rumour but I sure think thats a mistake until all of the graphic softwares run on Vista..

Thanks KFG, I thought that Poser wouldn't work with Vista so installed a dual boot and have XP running in a partition just for Poser.  Its working like a dream and now I'm cleaning up all my runtimes as they were a bit of a mess on my old puter.  Mojoworld renders much faster now too so I'm one happy camper...
