Dear Group Mind,

I've hit a wall. I know that Bryce can do a hell of a lot; I know this because I've seen it on this site.
But I don't know how to get there. 
I own the latest version of Bryce as well as the lame DVD tutorial the DAZ sells. (Sorry if any of you made it. But it really is hokey.  A side from the background story, (That's the lame part) there wasn't much I didn't already know.)
So now I’m looking for a good book, site or even a DVD the will teach me the things that the tutorial that came with my Bryce 5 didn't teach. Yes Bryce 5. You don't get a book with a down load.

I'm looking for the definitive Bryce Tutorial source. Help!

Theres a book called "real world bryce" or something like that... by Susan... somethin.. I'm pretty sure another regular here will know exactly what book i mean.

Susan Kitchens, Real World Bryce...sworn by many a Brycer. I think there's even a link in the title up there...or there used to be.

It must not be in print anymore but you can find it used at amazon.com   It is still 98% applicable to the latest versions of Bryce.   Great resource on  Bryce.

I also bought the Daz Bryce DVD.

Lynda.com makes amazing tutorials, I bought the Carrara Tutorial and its just amazing, I wish they would make one like that but for Bryce.

But I think Susan's book only went up to version 4. However, it's well worth it. There's a great wealth of tutorials here that are really useful, and many in google searches. But for me, the best source of help has been this forum. Search the archives here. Lots of ppl ask questions and get lots of answers. Some miss the mark, some hit it right on. But even the missed answers tend to be good sources for further experimentation. This forum is a really good tutorial.

if you think thats bad stay well away from the bryce 3d handbook it ...sucks mega.

I got up to page 27 in the manual (Bryce 5), Booleans just brought back too many painful memories of the esoteric math they tried to teach me in college...;)

What I would like is all the available tutorials in one book...It would be awesome.

pakled I got up you to animation and got bored. Although I did finish it.

I'm looking for more info on lighting, HDRI, atmosphere, modeling, rendering and just about everything else that's not cover in the damn book that came in the program. Oh wait you don’t even get that any more. (DAZ what good is “Help” if you can’t do a word search?) I have been able to pick up things from this little tutorial or that little tutorial. I am grateful for those of you who have been willing to impart what knowledge you have gained to the rest on us. A lot of what I do with Bryce beyond the basics I picked up on my own or from this site and others like it. (I love this place.)  If I had the knowledge I speak of I would put it into a book or series of books myself.

Put all the books on a bonfire (which you can ignite with the useless manuals from as many versions of Bryce as you can get hold of (I've got 3; each successively less useful/informative than the previous version), and use the forums here and at 3D Commune instead for (FREE!) advice and guidance, both general and specific, from people all over the world who will fall over themselves to offer advice and who are not out to make a quick buck/pound.  Look at the pictures you admire most and work out how you can re-create them.  Also resign yourself to the fact that ALL your spare time will be spent with Bryce - you will become your own best tutor/worst critic; that's the beauty/curse of Bryce. 

Bryce was born with the Internet, and there is an absolute wealth of infomation/communities/forums out there which offer a rock-solid alternative to parting with your hard-earned cash.

Trouble is that it's hard to refer to the monitor and forums while you are actually working in Bryce(unless you are rich enough to own more than one pc) so the actual printed word is much more helpful to me.Trouble is that by the time I print everything out from online I then have a complete mess of papers with illustrations on one page and instructions on the other and then they all fall in a heap on the floor and then I'm all out of order.This also presupposes my stupid Epson printer is actually co-operating in the first place and I get a clear print out with all illustrations and without half the instructions missing.Not all of us are that comfortable reading a off a monitor simply because of eyesight issues Video tuts are good to introduce one to the interface but only if they proceed at a reasonable pace.Even then working in Bryce and watching the vid/dvd is difficult A book is much easier manoeuvre in front of one's pc..well it is for me.Sorry to be so difficult

 Hmmmmm, this thread gets me to thinking. I started in Bryce around 2002 and the way I learned best was how rjay  and Incognitas had mentioned, by printing tutorials and following them. I have 5 years worth, anywhere from 50-75 (possibly more) printed turorials, and other documentation on Bryce, all pretty well organized and filed away (only drawback is about half are not in color).  
 What I was thinking is if  I were to organize these, scan and PDF them with an index, is this something the community would be interested in. Somtheing like this would probably take me some time to complete but would be willing to do it if enough were interested. One other problem would be finding someone to host it as I do not have a web site. Anybody want something like this ? 

Something I never thought about in my last post. Firstly, Am I allowed to do something like this ? These tutorials are not mine they all belong to someone else. Would I have to get the permission of every single author ?.  If I put a disclaimer on it stating they are not mine just a compilation, is that ok.

I actually printed-out and bound a Bryce manual. It was no end of help during my early renderings!

I like printed material best also.  For me it is easier to search and apply (and remember)

How can I get a copy? From my limited understanding it is okay to reprint or in this case PDF as long as it is not done for profit. So PLEASE PDF away. At the very least do you remember the original site?

I didn't get em all at one site. They were from several different sites. Whenever I would find a tutorial I would just print it out. After completing it I would just file it away with the others.

Hrm, can probably do this. Recreate those tutorials, improve them if needed, make new steps/illustrations. Make them your own. Cite original tutorials where needed. Give credit to the authors of the original tutorials if needed. Then make PDF's of them all.

I hope this benefits everyone. I still wish someone or even DAZ would put out a high quality printed tutorial.

Not yet. But it looks as though the Group Mind is coming to our aide.
If you have read any of the posts, you'll see that many have the same needs as me aas well as  you. It also seems many are willing to share the information gained over the years. It was my hope that this would get the ball rolling to benefit all.

Stay tuned to see what happens next.
