Subject: David or Micheal?

hdaggers ( ) posted Tue, 07 August 2007 at 7:59 AM · edited Thu, 05 December 2024 at 12:30 AM

Enough with the battle of the Vickys, what really confuses me is David and Mike. If they are both Unimesh are there any real differences? I've read a few product descriptions that suggest David might have morphs in common with Vicky(?) -- is that their difference? Can they use the same textures?

I understand David is "supposed" to be younger, but really they all look alike to me. Sometimes David's body looks more natural in promo pics, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Is there an advantage to using David? I see more and more products for D3 -- and there weren't that many for M3 to begin with....

I think it's mainly a matter of personal preference.....as in, I prefer Hiro, David, Behemoth, Adam (etc) over Mike in looks and personallity. (and yes, I know they're just little models on my computer....but Mike just never hit my "Take me home baby" button)

Same as with Vicky....I don't like her much either....but plenty of other people do.

So it's just down to which figure you like and what you want to use. I bummed around the MP for a while and kept coming back to some of Jepe's David morphs....and while the other Unimen can share the textures...the morphs enticed me to add David to my runtime. And I've been in Beefcake stupor ever since. ^_~

Of all the unimesh, most are grouped like V3 and can use her morphs, the exception is M3 and his spin-off The Freak.

Allegedly David bends better than Michael, which is probably true because each release of a unimesh figure tended to improve on the one before and the only one that DAZ doubled back and re-released was Victoria (Special Anniversary Edition), the flag-ship of the unimesh line. David in keeping with the young male categorization is shorter than M3.

The marketplace perception is that there isn't much for M3, but actually he probably comes in third as far as support for the unimesh 3 figures, right behind V3 and A3. There is much, much less available for D3.

David has superior joints to Mike and is easier to pose for me... he bends more naturally.

I also prefer David's face. He looks like a person... Mike always looks to me as if he's a shop mannequin.

But like Realmling said, it's all down to personal preference.

Yeah! Jepe's body hair is what made me wonder if I made a mistake investing in M3 (well, he was free at Daz but I bought his head/body morphs). Dissapointed with M3's body. He is very manniquin -like: bubbly plastic muscles that look hard and fake. Plus his nose and chin are starting to get on my nerves.... He seems like an expensive P4M (in my limited experience)....

David seems softer and beefier, but maybe that is only in the hands of an expert...? Are there crossover issues? Can they share anything (props, clothes) or is David a whole new investment? Somewhere I saw a M3 redux that changed his morphs to David, would that be an option?

thanks for advice. I'm not in any rush, but I don't necessarily want to invest long-term in 2 male figures if one will do.

The M3 Revisited is at PoserPros :tongue2: you know, where you can't get authorized to buy anthing. (They'll authorize you eventually).

I have him, but never used him, because I'm one of those rare M3 fans.

Here is a WIP of D3.

In a nutshell David is much more muscular than Michael 3.0; but not so much stronger than Michael 2.

Here is one of the images, of M2, from my gallery.

The Unimesh Morphs do will transfer into one another, and make deformations; but the deformations are based on the original unimesh figure's .OBJ., so they do'nt do the exact same thing from Unimesh Figure to Unimesh Figure.  For more on that see this recent thread:

M3's puffy shoulders drive me crazy. No matter what clothes he's wearing, he always looks like Joan Crawford in some 50's film noir movie. His bushy default eyebrows remind me of Joan Crawford too.
Now I'm scaring myself.

When I need a male figure, I use Michael 3.  However, I prefer to work with female figures because I find them much easier to work with.

I find it easier to dress and pose a female figure than to dress or pose a male one for some reason.  I find that the arms, legs and chest of male figures makes it so much harder to fit clothing to them.   Not to mention that the clothing choices for male figures is really limited, and there is so many more choices for a female figure.

I guess  basically what I'm saying is that I'm a sexist female,  LOL

Thanks for the good info and a simple fix. Why didn't I think of that?

Michael has one advantage over David in that you can get him for free right now.

Realmling ( ) posted Wed, 08 August 2007 at 10:32 PM

That's only the plastic morphless manequin base file for Mike though, you still have to purchase the head and morph packages to do anything relatively unique with him. (which is the same for just about every human figure Daz has)

Unless you're good with magnets and/or  creating morphs in a 3rd party app....then you wouldn't need the morph packs....

True.

Still, you'd need the Base David, in addition to the morph packages etc. wouldn't you?

In any case, all the anti-Michael posts in this thread seem to suggest why they're giving him away.

Unicornst ( ) posted Fri, 10 August 2007 at 7:46 AM

I think you can still get the Starter Content pack for free (it's a limited offer) and it has M3Reduced Resolution which has morphs, along with V3RR and lots of other things. I'd go that route (if the offer is still there) so you can get an idea for yourself about Michael.

Angelouscuitry ( ) posted Fri, 10 August 2007 at 8:37 AM

Unicornist - Go to Download.com and search for DAZ.  You'll see a figure pak with the actual V3, M3, Hiro, and Aiko; free!

Realmling ( ) posted Fri, 10 August 2007 at 8:44 AM

Yeah, I had to buy David & his morph packs....but with the PC discount (and uh...subsequent spending spree I had...) wasn't too bad. That was after deliberating a while if I really wanted yet another figure to sit around in my runtimes. lol

One might ask though, since they give the V3 and M3 bases for free....why haven't David & Steph recieved the same treatment so people could try them out too and see if they like those figures? Would be a much better way for people to compare the figures themselves, see what add-on stuff is available and which would work best for what they want.

But that's enough early morning rambling from me. =)

Probably because putting David and Stephanie in the PC Club is a bigger draw for the PC Club. Can't give away all the figures.

Don't forget the size differences. David is smaller than Mike3. He's perfect for an almost-adult-teenager if seen in scenes with Mike3. As long as he's on his own, that doesn't matter of course (in fact, my Geezer has made David into an old guy)

Personally I prefer David, he has better joints and a cuter face. But Mike has more clothes available, so it depends on the picture I'm making which figure I'll use. And I use 99% males in my pictures...

I have them, Angel. I was just trying to say a free way to get the reduced resolution models to compare, also.

I am aquainted with two real-world men -- one of them is about 5' tall (or less), and probably weighs in, dripping wet, at around 100lbs.  The other one is approx. 6'-2" tall, and probably tips the scales over and crashing to the floor at something like 350lbs+.  If I was going to attempt to model the first man, I'd use David as a base.  If I was going to attempt to model the second man, then I'd use M3 as a base.

But I use female figures in my scenes about 90% of the time.  It's a deep mystery as to why that would be the case.

BTW - as a bit of an OT side note -- recorded female voices are the ones most often used in things like alarm systems for the military.  This is because studies have shown that men respond more quickly to the sound of a woman's voice than they do to the sound of a man's voice.  Once again: a deep mystery.  I wonder how much money they had to spend to figure that one out..........?

The sound of  Man's voice is most pleasant, when speaking for Mens'!

M3 has'nt 1/2 the potential to be a Naturally Strong Man, as D3.  I've been waiting on Mass for M3; though it's been a while, since he's delivered on the Lean side.
