Subject: Animating textures between keyframes?

EddyLoonstijn ( ) posted Fri, 10 August 2007 at 7:04 AM · edited Wed, 20 November 2024 at 7:21 PM

I want to be able to animatie an object that not only changes its position or MT but also switches its imported texture from keyframe to keyframe.
I suppose it is not possible, it seems to be only possible to animate the color and some other characteristics of the outside look of the object.

Maybe someone has a briljant idea?

Waiting, holding my breath,

You can load more than one texture into the objects shader. Then combine them using either Blender nodes or Color_Ramp nodes. The Blender node only handles 2 inputs but is easy to use. Set both its colors to 1. Connect your first texture image to the first input. Connect your second to the second input.  The third parameter will control how much of the two inputs get blended. A zero will choose 100% of the first, and a one will choose 100% of the second. Animate that parameter.

If you use the Color_Ramp node, you have 4 inputs you can blend instead of just two. Set all the colors to white, and connect up to four Image_Map nodes. Then blend using these key values 0=first image, .3333=second image, .6666=third image, 1=fourth image.

Wherever you originally had the image connected, now plug the blender or color ramp in instead. Usually this will be Diffuse_Color.

If you need more than 4 images blended, add another blender or color ramp - connect the first color ramp to the first input of the second color ramp. Then you can add 3 more images. So 2 color ramps can blend 7 images. 3 color ramps can blend 10 images, and so on.

Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

Or you could use something like VirtualDub or other video editor to
assemble your images into an uncompressed AVI movie..... then
apply this AVI to a Movie node.  (Under 2D textures in the materials room.)

Wow, Bagginshill and Ockham, you really gave me something to explore and start experimenting with. I come back with some "results"!
Thanks, EddyL

Virtual Dub!  Woot!

Uhmmm...  Does it have to be uncompressed?  I've always thought avis were compressed BTW.

When you save an avi file you get the option of no compression (Full Frames Uncompressed) or compression via whatever codecs you happen to have installed.

Righto...  But to use the movie node, does it need to be uncompressed?

Not sure if some codecs would cause probs but I have used DivX compressed avi's in them with no trouble.
