what about writing precisely the same in google
or wikipedia

anyway this a way to find informations
and if you are writing thoses terms this is because you read about it somewhere so those information have also web sites and sides.

some firms also like sony, canon, olympus who work with pictures and digital and solutions, can or may have some contact adresses to give you thoses informations so this is your quest

hello !

i know just a little about this, because it's really not important in my opinion. so :

ed -> Nikon, low distorsion lens, because of special treatment
usm -> canon, ultrasonic motor in the lens for af
af -> autofocus
dc -> sigma, lenses for digital body
ex -> sigma, expert lens (high quality)
'                 ' -> leica, they wrote nothing on their lens because they are just perfect  lolllllllllllllllllllllllllll

hope this help ;o)

VR means Vibration Reduction (Nikon) - it is an electronic feature built into the lens that provides stabilization so your shots won't be as shaky - you won't have that hand held jitter that makes your images fuzzy.

When you see OS, it is mostly used by Canon and Sigma (I'm sure there are others - those 2 only came to mind as the most prodominant ones) - it means Optical Stabilizer - same thing as VR - different brands call them different things.

Olivier already gave you some examples:
ED - Extra-low Dispersion glass - more light passes through this type of glass allowing for faster shutter speeds with lower available light. (or a pain in the butt if you're using strobes set to their lowest levels and WANT to open your lens to its widest aperture and CAN'T!!! - but that's another thread...)

USM - Canon - Ultra-Sonic Motor - much faster motor that is very quiet - so you won't disturb the wedding, or scare the birds you are trying to shoot. Sigma calls theirs HSM - Hyper-Sonic Motor - same thing. Nikon used to call theirs AF-S (AutoFocus Silent) but they may have changed that meaning recently because I am seeing that moniker on more versions of lower-cost lenses - or they may just be incorperating it into more lenses, I dunno.

DX or DC - Sigma lenses - designed for digital cameras with an APS-C sized sensor - cannot use themon regular 35mm cameras or you'll have dark corners (vignetting).

Yeah, as mentioned above, throw out the lens you want into the forums and someone (or several of us) will have an explaination for you as to what the abbreviations mean.
Good luck and happy shooting-

Alex,

I Googled "photography glossary" and found this, among other sites:

http://www.nikonians.org/glossary.html

Since you're looking at a VR lens, I thought a Nikon site would be useful for you.

www.nikonusa.com - yes, it's for the USA, but it's the same info as far as tech specs.

Actually, since we're talking Nikon (you mentioned VR on a lens you wanted - that's Nikon) - try www.nikon.com and pick your area of the world.
Or www.canon.com if Canon is your brand of camera.

Pretty much any brand of camera you're interested (Olympus, Pentax, etc.) - just their name (www.camerabrand.com) will bring up the main "from anywhere in the world" site where you pick your country and then you are redirected to THAT particular site.

Also, go into a camera shop (not a large retail place like an electronics store - those are better if you KNOW what you want - their knowledge tends to not be as indepth) and talk to the people behind the counter. Have them SHOW you what things mean - the cameras and lenses and flashes on the counter are demo equipment that you are allowed to hold, and they can go over the differences between brands and what their abbreviations mean (because yes, there are a TON of them!).

Good luck-
-Lew ;-)
