Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 06 11:58 am)
The Modo->Poser route already works well (for making poser content). The Poser->Modo route (for rendering) takes a fair amount of work.
I'm interested to see what the Lightwave exporter in Poser Pro will offer, because Modo can read .LWO and .LWS files directly (lightwave scenes and lightwave objects). That should make it a whole lot easier to get complete poser scenes into Modo with materials and textures intact for rendering. It's currently a bit of a pain (via obj) to get complex material stacks set up again.
EDIT: It's also worth noting that as the Poser+Modo community grows in numbers we are likely to see better integration between the 2, perhaps only at script/plugin level, but maybe more in time.
The Modo community is also pretty cool about Poser. Those who don't use or don't like poser don't feel the need to condemn it at every turn, they just use other more sophisticated rigging and animating tools.
If you want to buy Modo new, it will set you back $895.00. If you take DAZ's modo 103 for $139.90 for PC members, then add the upgrade to 301 for $295.00, that comes to around $434.90 for version 301. Let's see, $895.00 vs $434.90. If you want to upgrade after 301 is released, then the upgrade is $100.00 more. Still not a bad deal.
Huh? Worst case scenario (like if you missed out on all specials): Regular price of the current version (203) plus regular upgrade to to 301 is $895+$395=$1290 total.
I bought 201 on a pre-order special for $695, I've paid for the 301 pre-order for $295, that's **$990 total.
**You could buy 103 for $139, skip 203 and pre-order 301 for $295, that's $434 total.
And you don't think that's a good deal?
I jumped on it the first night and will be pre-ordering for 301. I have only had it for a litle over 24 hours, using 103 and have morphed V4 across groups. Just opend her straight from the geometry folder. Saves all groups intact. No pre setups or work arounds. You can build your own tools to use over again.
For another $ 295 for 301, how can you not go for it. You do need to wait for the per order list to show up after you have registered you 103 copy, it took a day for mine to show up but it was worth the wait at that price. Plus your not charged until it ships.
I'll tell you, Hex, silo, shade, which I have been using, are nothing compared to what I can do with 103, let alone what 301 will be like.

Sounds like Modo users are cool - not uptight.
This has caught my interest. I've heard good things about Modo -- including the fact that it works well with Lightwave. It's good to hear that Modo works well with Poser for content creation purposes, too.
Can someone tell me -- how is Modo with inorganic modeling? Is Modo a good app for modeling buildings, vehicles, machines, etc.? Thanks.

There is a large group of Architectural Modo users..just pop over to the Luxology forum to find them. There are even scripts to create windows, skirting etc.

You can use Modo for Subdivision surfaces or polygon modelling or a mixture, so it's well suited to inorganics.
There are certainly better tools for architectural modeling than versions 103 and 203, but 301 has big improvements in snapping which I'm sure will change that. Luxology is taking the needs of the arch-viz community seriously.
For examples of other inorganic stuff, check out this link: www.sdmodo.org/sdmodoProjects.html
This was a collaborative project in which about 70 modo users from around the world modelled the San Diego Aerospace Museum and most of the aircraft inside it, just for fun. The link above links to the WIP threads for all the models, there are some very cool models in that collection.
Thanks very much to both of you -- that helps a lot.
I already have Lightwave and Vue 6I -- and I'm thinking that Modo might be a better fit into my current software flow than some other alternatives that I've been considering.
I suppose that I have until Aug. 31st to make a decision. That's when the Platinum Club Modo sale ends.
I'm now on board as well. I'm getting the upgrade for the high end painting, morphing and UV capabilities for sure!! I was just blown away watching that hella long intro (it was over a gigabyte long download) but was so well done and covered things so well how could I not. I've not been very happy with my DeepExploration bundle deal I bought a few months back and hardly any support for any of the tools. I was hoping DeepPaint would be the tool for me but even though it's updated it's outdated and with no support (or hardly any support) it's just a drag firing it up and then getting stuck and not knowing what the hell to do!! So since Modo is used by the best in the bus, it's got a very friendly community, is well supported, is constantly being worked on to make it even better and even email support is just fast as lightning I think anyone that's looking for the best solution for their needs, whether your needs and desires are of a professional nature or, like myself, a wanna be merchant / hobbiest you would be a fool to pass up such a deal!

Haven't actually used Modo myself, but it should be great for any kind of modeling.. The developement team behind Modo are from the original creators of Lightwave. They left NewTek a few years back and started their own company 'Luxology" and Modo was born.

Quote - Apparently there is a little bit of animation in Modo itself...I think basically the animation of the camera so you can move around in the fantastic sets. The render engine produces some terrif. images.
::::: Opera :::::
Yes 301 is bringing in some animation tools, a basic timeline and the ability to animate cameras, morphs, lights and so on, the primary thing it will be still missing is any kind of rigging support.

If you are interested in an excellent modeller which looks set to go places, now's a really good time to grab Modo.
Daz is offering Luxology's Modo 103 here:

It's possible to upgrade to Modo 203 (the current version) or to Modo 301 (to be released very soon) .
There's a lengthy thread that answers about every possible question here:

This is a good deal, I've been using Modo for a year or so and I love it, as a tool for making Poser content it is hard to beat even in its current version and the next version looks even better.
