Hmmm...Mae West is what we called the life jackets when I was in the U.S. Navy...If you've ever seen one the reference is obvious.  I wonder why they would call a generator by the same nickname?  Good looking 2-way, btw. 

After some googling, I see the generator is more commonly known as
a Gibson Girl.  It's SCR-578 to be exact.

Has anyone done a HAM Radio set-up yet?  I've seen towers but no transmitter/receiver set-ups.

Correct as that is what I remember calling them in the Navy too! Actually the term Mae West goes all the way back to WWII as it was the name used by fighter and bomber pilots for the inflatable yellow life vest. They were named so after the actress Mae West again for obvious reasons..LOL!

I assume you know that Motorola was one of the prime contractors of that Walkie Talkie Radio....Ever wonder where Motorola came up with the design for there first portable cellular phone...commonly called the "Motorola Brick" in industry circles? Three guess and the first two don't count :) Nice looking product

Antonia, that's a great model.  I don't blame you for selling it.  Well done!

Oh, it's a way from being ready. The front panels need texturemapping for the labels, bi-lingual English and Russian. There are also the two aerial leads, and it really needs the control box into which headphones and mic would be plugged. But, yeah, it looks good already. Trouble is that there's a bit of QRM to deal with. The hand-held set was something I could throw together in the moments I had. The thing is, while I can remember radios with valves/vacuum-tubes, I was really in the classic disrete transistor era, doing a bit of soldering in the days before LSI and surface-mount. I get nwervous about specs that have 500v HT lines, but it's oddly easier to cope with, as a concept, than the multi-pin black boxes of the current era.

*Seems it wouldn't be too hard to make a generic radio set, provided you didn't have to read the dials... (heck, I made a modular Moog a while back, and that has a lot more knobs..;) There was a Wings contest a coupla years back to make the telegraph key, so there may be one or 2 floating around..

It' now up in the Freestuff. There's rather a large batch been approved todaym so it's already well down the second page. Or search for "BC-611". Considering some of the comments I've made, I have an uncomfortable feeling that I may have got the scale wrong. At least that's fixable.

May I take this chance to thank all those who have been foolhardy enough to download my work. I hope yoiu get as much pleasure out of your renders I as did out of reaching a conclusion to my project. If anyone want to suggest something else to make in this line, I don't promise anything, but ideas will be appreciated. A Gibson Girl sounds good. With the Vietnam models at Vanishing Point, something like the PRC-25 or PRC-77 looks worth a try (Backpack tactical radio). Any other ideas?

How about a 'secret' radio/transmitter set, the type used in WWII by the resistance movement. Hidden in a suitcase type of thing. Could certainly use something like that.

There's one website here. The suitcases were, apparently, embarrassingly distinctive. Or maybe a Paraset? Yes, it's a good idea. Real life is getting a bit awkward, but a Paraset lookalike is a good project for anyone who wants to have a go.
