Subject: Which imports best into P7: .3DS or .Obj files?

Hi,

I'm going to buy some 3rd-party model files (buildings), and they're available in a variety of formats... (though not poser native format)...

Overall, which format have you found imports best into Poser 7: .obj files, or .3ds format?
(I could also get in lightwave format)...

main thing I want to make sure imports well, is complex textured surfaces and reflections/lighting etc..

thanks!

Better use OBJ files ..much better suport in many programs then 3DS

So make it OBJ... 😉

OBJ is Poser's native format for geometry.  Some later versions of 3DS stuff doesn't import correctly.

Objs have mtl files that allow you to texture material zones. 3ds dosn't I don't think. But 3ds are alomst allways smaller files.

Hey there  - If you want to make the 3DS or lightway into Poser - use PoseRay. I don't know the link of hand but it will convert the files to OBJ files. It is a real wonder, and you don't have to worry about setting it up right. Great little program.

hey thanks everyone, much appreciated ... it's neat that there's so much 3d model content out there, for 3ds and other platforms, and that they're somewhat cross-compatible... I appreciate your sharing your tips on 3ds vs obj... fun stuff, this 3d world...

I use Anim8tor and have found that imported obj files do not carry the material zones when imported, where as 3DS does....!
Not sure why but for this reason I have been using 3DS with good sucess.

ohj. files are native to Poser. The Poser geometry folder is full of them and they include all the poser and daz figures. The obj. format allows for uv mapping.
