Subject: Trains and Buildings (FREE)

Acadia ( ) posted Mon, 10 September 2007 at 2:43 AM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 1:04 AM

I came across this site with some trains and train textures and buildings on it.  They aren't a format that I'm familiar with, but thought I'd post it anyway.  Maybe someone will know of a program that can convert the tiles.

Well, since they DON'T cost a $100.00 each, it should surely be well worth someones effort to figure out a way to get them inot poser.  I also once downloaded a non-articualted steam locomotive from the Daz Freestuff.  So far, I've yet to determine whether the $100.00 locomotive in the MP is any more articulated than the nicely detailed, albeit unarticulalted, one.  Anyway, it's very hard to beat a better deal than free.

I don't know of any prog that can convert 'em but it does serve to point out that locos, rolling stock and so forth are sadly under represented in Poser.  The only ones I've ever seen are US style or fantasy/SF style.  I'd love a set of British railway stuff, old and current.

Poserworld has a 1970's style British railway carriage interior but that's about it.

We also have a train and carriage exterior too, but have you seen the carriage in the MP here, it looks fantastic......Steve

Well, there are fully rigged and poserized trains available, in fact, there are loads.

I count about 13 different types of locomotives, carraiges and rolling stock for Poser, plus railway stations (9 different ones), rail sets (three different ones), and all sorts of signage and signalling add-ons.

Everything needed for train animations and renders is available already, except for the Giger train, I am still waiting for that one.

I didn't try to download them.  I opened the zip right at the site to look at the format. I know they aren't Poser format or even .obj format. Not sure what those file extensions are for.  I thought perhaps that someone might post how to convert them so people could use them.  They look like nice models.

The guy who runs that site is Ron Paludin, who is also kown as the merchant 3DCritter on Vanishing Point. I think he may be 3D Critter here on Renderosity as well. I will mail him and tell him about this thread, maybe he can help you guys. This is one of his Poser models, so he knows Poser, if there is a way to convert these for Poser, he will be the one to know.

The models appear to be for microsoft train simulator (game)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Train_Simulator

I looked at the zip files, the textures are bitmaps, but it appears that the geometries are in Train Simulator proprietary files. Maybe the game itself has something that imports/exports geometry.

I don't get the feeling that the use outside of the train simulator was intended, or okay. I just like to play it safe :)

Helgard, those are some neat railroad pieces you guys offer :)

Yes, they are for the Microsoft Train Simulator. My father has that game. Useless for our 3d apps. They are not models, but skins for the trains in the game.

JHoagland ( ) posted Mon, 10 September 2007 at 10:01 PM

Even if the models can be converted to a format that's usable to us modellers, what's the polygon count? I'm sure it has to be very low to be usable in the game... which may mean it's far too low to look good when rendered in Poser.

Yes, I know there are a lot of low-poly models that look great in Poser... but the Train Simulator models weren't originally designed for use in Poser. ;)

There are some skins there, but there are also models that he created.

giger as in "alien 1" and "heavy metal"? that has gotta be one freaky train IMVHO.

AntoniaTiger ( ) posted Tue, 11 September 2007 at 3:06 AM

I think MS have effectively dropped their Train Simulator, but there is a huge amount of stuff out there. If I remember right, the models have to be made in gmaz format and then imported. If you can handle converting gmax to .obj you might be able to contact one of the creators and arange a test: in some ways it's rather like any other bunch of 3d enthusiasts. I think the models are pretty low-res, but some people did some quite detailed animation.

Miss Nancy,

The train was made by Giger for the movie Species, but the scene was cut from the movie.
