Subject: Batch renaming of bits inside Poser files?! Possible?

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Thu, 20 September 2007 at 9:49 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 10:39 AM

I have a bunch of files where I need to change a lot of texture references from .PNG to .jpg.

Of course, I could open each file and do a Search-and-replace, but it struck me that there just might be a program that could do that in one go. Kinda like what Correct Reference does.

Or CAN CR do it? I do have the Pro version but I don't even know what to look for there?

Help, please!

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Yes it is possible. I am on a Mac so I am not sure of the best text editing program for a PC but I do it all the time in BBEdit. There has to be one of them that does batch editing. I am not sure about CR though. Sorry.

Thanks. Now I just need to go buy me a Mac ;o)

Hmm that gives me hope at least.

If all else fails, perhaps you could help me with the renaming? For a fee, of course.

I am on a Mac and  use text wrangler. http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/index.shtml
It's free

I assume you are on a PC and I assume some mac users are going to read this post...so I thought it wouldn't hurt to post an alternative solution. There has to be like products that are freeware or shareware for PC's like textwrangler. Not being a PC person google on the words without the quotes "PC mass replace text" and you will get a long list of freeware looking apps it appears to me that seem to do what textwrangler does but for a PC.

I just copy the files to a new folder (keeping the originals in case I make a mistake and need to start over). Select all the files in the finder and Cmd-O to open them all. In the find and replace it has a option to do the find a replace across all open files, save them as you go automatically, so you don't have to save each file one at a time, reports back what it did, etc. Fast easy and simple to do.

There is another program I use for file names called MassReplaceIt.
http://www.hexmonkeysoftware.com/
It is also supposed to go inside the file and do what text wrangler does. But since it is not a text editor and I can see or verify the changes inside the file with MassReplaceIt, I only use it for file names. Really slick for removing all those multi !!! or ! ! ! some artists put in the front of their pz2 to the point you can't read what the full file name is on the Library pallet. I use it to remove spaces in pz2's and make the names of the files readable in lenght and meaning to me all the time.

Hi TG I use BK ReplaceEm for that type of work http://www.orbit.org/replace/ Freeware - does a great job of replacing jpg with png or even removing .jpg " to .jpg" Sometimes quicker than CRPro for long runs of text replacement, of course, it only works on uncompressed files. You can create groups of replacements that you likely to run more than once too Hope it works for you, Indoda

You don't say how many files, but TextPad will happily handle twenty (that's how many I've done it with).

Free version of Editpad has an option to search and replace in all open files (I'm not sure how many you can open)

I use a program that came from WinCustomise with my Window Blinds or one of their other products called "Object Edit". It's basically a Large file text editor. I simply go to edit and replace and it will replace all occurances or just the one's you want.

Thanks guys! I'll try some of the suggestions and let you know what works best.

There are more than 20 files, but I don't need to open them all in one go of course. :o)

I usually use one of the utilities that comes with PERL for this sort of thing (but then I'm used to command line stuff).

I second the recommendation for TextPad, and I think I've done around 50 at some point or other. Just open all of them and make sure you choose "all files" for the replacement.

Need another suggestion? ;) Crimson Editor can also do the search/replace in all open files trick. I'm not sure what the limit is on open files: never found it yet.

I'm a command-line kind of guy myself, so it's natural for me to resort things like "Gsar" which is a Unix port. Gsar=General Search And Replace. It has no limits and can go thru your whole Runtime if you so desire.

I ended up trying the BK ReplaceEm as the first - and only one. Because that did exactely what I needed it to do, even inside the .ds ascii files :o))))

So thanks for the tip about that program! I can't believe it's free! It's truly awesome!

And thanks for the other suggestions as well, even if I didn't use them :o)
