Subject: Cyclorama Overkill In Feestuff

Dajadues ( ) posted Sun, 30 September 2007 at 9:39 AM · edited Fri, 15 November 2024 at 1:28 AM

Thought I'd mention it because it's getting very hard to wad through ten thousand backgrounds to get to an actual freebie, for something  that's for a paid item. You need to have it to even use it.

A tad bit of overkill don't you think? Im not griping but, I think it's getting out of control. Is it that widely used?

It's ruining free stuffy because it's burying all the real freebies that people might use under props.

V3 isn't a paid item? V4? M3? A3? Poser?

Im not talking about figures. Im talking about props. It's overkill is all I'm saying. When I look through free props I expect to see free props, not 2D backgrounds. The good stuff is getting buried by someonthing that shouldn't even be there. 20 pages of backgrounds? what a waste of bandwidth.

Casette ( ) posted Sun, 30 September 2007 at 9:47 AM

I can't see what's the difference between freebs for figures and freebs for props. Some cyclorama users are saving their day

Im talking about props not figures. I want to see props not pages of backgrounds that you have to buy that item to use thats not a freebie that a lazy man's way out.

In my opinion, 2D backgrounds should not be under props. It's 2D not 3D nor is it a model.

I think there should be a separate section for background textures.  That way, everyone wins.  Folks who want backgrounds can find them all in one place, those who want other stuff don't have to wade through all the backgrounds.

I agree that it's a problem of categorizing.  When I look for a prop, I have
to wade through a lot of textures.

There is already a category for 2D : Backgrounds, and that's where the
background textures should go, not in Props!

Sam beat me to it. :)

Im not sure why it's getting uploaded to 3D props when it's not a prop but a background. It should be uploaded to 2D or, give it it's own category at this rate. Someone discovered it after all these years and went nuts lol.

You need to have it to even want to download the background for it. If someone is new to 3D they aren't even going to know wha it is and you have to pay for it in the first place to use it.

That wouldn't really apply for Cyclorama or Infinity Cove textures though. Cyclorama and Infinity Cove are 3D props/figures that require a special mapped image. So those images aren't really 2D anymore because you need a 3D prop/figure to use them with.

I do agree that they should categorize differently.  Allow for target searching by category uploaded, and break "textures and meshes" into more categories so that there isn't such a hodge podge of things in there.

I don't think it's that. If you look at the link to most of those types of things you will find that they go to "http://www.sharecg.com" The problem is that word of mouth got around that if you host your downloads there that you can make some money. So now people are slapping together as many things as they can, and instead of bundling several items into one zip they now do it singly, in order to get as many downloads and hits at sharecg.com as they can in order to make a few pennies.  That IMHO is what the problem is.

I've even noticed that some people are offering their outfit textures that contain multiple items, as separate downloads  for each part of the item (ie: dress, left shoe, right shoe, belt etc) instead of one zipped package for the whole outfit.

This wasn't a problem before people started to use "sharecg.com".  I think the only way this problem is going to go away is if:

  1. Renderosity bans the use of sharecg.com for downloads
  2. Starts to take a hardened stance on what is being uploaded and how IE: dozens of single items vs a bundle of 5 or 10 cyclorama textures, or one outfit texture vs 7 uploads for separate parts of that texture.
  3. Puts in a deterent of 1 upload per day per user instead of the multiple uploads that they currently have.

Not really the same as a regular 2d background.  Also they are very much needed.  I do agree though the freebie area SERIOUSLY needs some kind of moderator/staff - organizing and checking items in it.

While we are complaining about freebies (LOL)  I'd like to note that I despise sites that want me to sign up/ register, to download a freebie.  I never get those : /

Sharecg.com is a fine service, IMHO. For both, freebie providers and users. But people do missusing it :(

pjz99 ( ) posted Sun, 30 September 2007 at 11:03 AM · edited Sun, 30 September 2007 at 11:05 AM

on ShareCG: It's set up with a really irritating model right now that encourages people to be as noisy as possible in an attempt to get money.  Frankly I think Rendo shouldn't accept freebies hosted from ShareCG just because the model is basically one that encourages people to post the maximum amount per day, regardless of quality or public interest.  Five separate uploads per day, each containing a single bitmap - one guy went out in his yard and took 5 pictures of his driveway and posted each one separately.

edit: I think this will eventually break itself anyway, as more and more people jump on the ShareCG bandwagon - Jumpstartme2 or whoever has to actually test and approve freebie items will get sick of handing this way, and quit doing it.

I used to spend a great deal of time looking in the freebie area here.  I don't bother anymore.  I still go there and do searches for specific "words" if I see someone looking for something, but I never bother with "what's new" or just browsing anymore because as you say it's all poster boards and backgrounds.

The abuse of the free area has turned me off of that area here.

my response:

my freebies are hosted by divshare (sharecg annoyed me), but the links HERE take you to my own webpage where you click a picture and it takes you to divshare - i do not, nor will i ever (knock on wood LOL) package a "complete package" as seperates (even if i switched to sharecg)- its annoying for me to have to download "left shoe, right shoe, belt, shirt" - why put someone else through that?

Maybe a seperate section for cyclorama textures under props?  i agree, it gets annoying wading through pages of them.

i dont think there's going to be an "easy" solution to this issue, however, folks....

I was pleased when I found ShareCG as a site to host my freebies for nothing - the fact they paid a little money made no difference - I am getting annoyed with those who are misusing it because it will either lead to the site closing, Renderosity banning it, or something that'll spoil it for the modeller. Please Mods etc look into this before it does cause damage to what was a tremendous amount of well made free stuff.

I think you'll are whisteling in the wind at renderosity doing something about it.  It's NOT in there interest.
The freebees section is one of the biggest draws for this site or any site. The bigger and more active a freebee section is the more people come to see. And way big time the more people RETURN.
Now, this site has slowly been loosing return members (of course they deny(sp) it with corporate speek) but the forums, freestuff, the MP, chat all are on the downward curve of the business cycle.
The free stuff is, for many pissed off artist the only real reason to return here.

I don't post them here in freestuff, because of the direct link requirement.

As of this coming week, ShareCG will be weeding out a HUGE amount of junk according to the admin's there. They're actively going to be booting accounts that are abusing the system with BoT's and other nonesense. As for the different page for each item of clothing, I'd appreciate a link to that so it can be pointed out to the admin's there as an abuse of the system.

Hmmm...guess I'll take this from the top and work my way down 😉

  1. Cyclorama props...these props are in the correct category for the most part.{Poser->Poser Ready Props->Texture Addons}...We might think about adding more categories later, but right now we're working on some ideas for the freestuff section of the site, {see # 4.} and we will not be adding new categories yet.

2.There are many items in the freebie section where you must have a 'paid for' item/program in order to get the freebie item to work, so I'm not sure what that area of the complaint is?

  1. To my knowledge, we have no plans of limiting where providers host their items, {as long as the sites are free to join, and do not lead/link to age restricted content, we have no problem with them.} and we have no plans of insisting that providers do not use ShareCG. ShareCG is working on trying to cut down on the abuse of uploads, and so are we.

  2. At this moment, we do not plan on forcing members to upload only bundles..however there are plans in the works as we speak,  to do things a little differently in the freestuff area, due to the mass uploading.

  3. I have not seen the issue of providers uploading single items that go with one outfit in separate uploads..such as left shoe, right shoe, ect..If you know of this, shoot me a sitemail and give me a link and I will get that straightened out.

Pjz, thanks for bringing that duplicate upload to my attention..I'll def get that fixed ;)

If I have missed anyones question or complaint, let me know :)

Thanks!

I would never presume it to be a "right", I was simply saying that those are freebies I will never have access to.  Daily I get about 100 spam mails.   Unfortunately I don't want to add to that.  Ironically I only started getting spam after starting to sign up for 3d sites, and reputable ones at that.  It is kind and generous of you to reward your members = D.

Ok I followed that link and just checked those all out and here's what I found.

For the Hat's she included 39 different texture sets.
For the boots she included 16 different textures.
For the Jacket there were 57!!!
For the dress there were 24 textures.

If she had zipped all of these up as one set it would never likely have uploaded in the first place due to size.  Each download contains multiple mix and match quality textures and they're free. People should really look at what they're complaining about. These items were all multiple item freebies and they ARE bundled up!

EDIT: Oh yeah! I did Download all four of them! I consider them very generous freebies.

it's easy to ignore the endless photos in freestuff here, as they've set it up so that users can exclude photos. however, if the sharecg site owner, who is also a member here, decides that revenues are dropping due to excessive photo abuse, then he'll take the necessary action. the photos will dry up overnite if there's no incentive for posting 'em IMVHO. OTOH, if the photos are generating the same revenue per page view as the 3d items, then tim (et al. here) may decide in favour of further limits, unless some deal can be worked out in regard to advertising receipts from sharecg IMVHO.

The link I was given was in reference to people saying someone was uploading single items like right foot left foot texture sets. What your pointing to is something that should be handled by the freestuff mod's here at Renderosity. They don't allow multiple item links to the same Item that I'm aware of. I suggest when you find items like that that you report them to the mod's here. That's a blatant abuse of the system here not just the ShareCG system.

I was thinking that too - some forums give you the ability to "ignore" other members - that would be good if it extended to areas like the freestuff.

I didn't know about the cash-for-clicks thing at ShareCG - finally explains why the "Cyclorama Freestuff" artist is constantly bombing all the freebie areas with links.

I like Deskar's Fractalesque objects but they could do with bundling 4 or 5 to a zip.

It's worth checking the new freestuffs at the moment - there are some cool Lost in Space-ish type models hidden among the Cyclobloat...

Cheers

cash per page view at sharecg. viewers don't even hafta click the ads AFAIK. if the 2d items are underperforming at sharecg, or if the incidence of click- bots is more pronounced with page views of the 2d items, then the site owner may delete 'em to conserve space for legit 3d items. my feeling on the 2d items is that they're loading 'em to get money from sharecg, whilst the modellers are loading their 3d items to share them with members here. I gotta think, from a sys-admin's point of view, that it would be a real bummer if folks were uploading useless items, then setting up a click-bot program to rip off sharecg.

Just a note, one of those Spaceships was just updated with a missing reflection map that was causing some Poser 7 users to hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE in frustration because it's runtime search was taking forever to find the missing files. Ooops! Any reflection map would have done but since I got the complaint it's fixed now. (I hope) The download is now noted as UPDATE over on ShareCG and I'm off to add that word to the description here. You don't really need to download it again if you have any suitable chrome reflection map to use.

just a comment: i was really glad as a freebie "customer" when ShareCG popped up.  most of the free file hosting sites bombard me with nasty ads and suspicious cookies that i frequently have to accept to download the item in question.  some don't work in Firefox, and all have been pretty annoying to me usability wise.  i read at DAZ some installed trojans and spyware on people's machines.  ShareCG has been a much better place to frequent.

on the separate downloads for multiple images thing, i can't see what the problem is, myself.  i frequent lots of free stock photo sites and such, and none bundle images in a set to my knowledge.  and i've only rarely downloaded a whole "set" of photos.  usually, if it's the same subject, i choose which shot i think is  best.  i mean, sets of photos are cool and all, but i much prefer the one download per image approach as it means i don't get tons of photos i don't want with one i do.  if the site was Share3d i'd say photos have little place there, but in this case...

i personally don't see why someone should morally bundle their photos unlike the dozen or so sites i've got bookmarked.  not that i don't understand being annoyed or think some aren't taking advantage, but i think it's a mistake to assume usage compliant with the standard in free stock photos, the source of much 2d CG,  is deliberately malicious.

pjz99 ( ) posted Wed, 03 October 2007 at 3:01 PM

It'll break soon enough - the big problem with people uploading single images is that it abuses ShareCG's payout model in comparison to what the modelers offer.  A good model or serious texture set can take many days to produce - the 5 per day rate at which certain other items gets posted speaks for itself.  IMO it's not a very fair model at all, and obviously not what the freebies "market" wants - look at the numbers, some things can't even be given away.
