A reply from Poser Tech support revealed that there is a known issue with the hardware Open GL based preview engine and several high end video cards, the NVidia Quadro FX 4500 inlcuded.  The solution?  They are working on it!

Good they do, b/c there is a problem as well but it don't get me in the way that much..however sometimes the smooth shaded Display view of the model show the previews from the material room but only sometimes..  forget not to instal new Direct X from Microsoft and set your graphic card for speed or quality.. the preview openGL in Poser7 will change dramatic, NVidia is the best..
