THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: November Bryce Challenge - "The Feast" - Images Here

Death_at_Midnight ( ) posted Sun, 16 September 2007 at 3:46 PM · edited Wed, 07 August 2024 at 1:44 PM

Theme: "The Feast"

Postwork: Yes
Due date: November 16, 2007, at midnight, Renderosity server time.
Voting:      November 16 to 23, at midnight, Renderosity server time.
Image must be a Bryce render.

The theme is "The Feast" which implies a cornucopia of good food and good times--a time of meaning.

The Thanksgiving holidays are approaching, here in the US. It usually is cold and wintery, and the kitchen is the warmest spot in the house. A bustle of activity, the kitchen is a center of attention, but that attention soon shifts as turkey is brought out to the dining room. Over a large table cloth, the dining table is filled with wine cups, plates, and silverware, and an assortment of food--salad, cranberry, potatoe salad, turkey, ham, hot buttered roles, stuffing, wine bottles, sweet potatoe or yams, gravy, corn, pecan pie just to name a few. Then the relatives come over, and no one can hear the music playing on the radio over the talking and laughter.

This theme is of the feast. There is much subject matter to work with. Some ideas to help get your creative mood going: traditional feast, vikings, table full of food, empty plates, busy kitchen, kitchen with a pile of plates, the hunting party returning to camp, pilgrims and indians, popcorn!
Oriental Thanksgiving, medieval feast, happy klingons watching dancing twi'leks over a table of  gagh, romantic dinner for two, space feast, two orphan children gazing through a frosted window upon food they wished they had, Greek mythology, cornucopia.....

One question...  Why is challenge not ending on a more established date?  We changed from monthly to bi-montly to give more folks a change to enter an image.    Would it not be simplier to end submissions on midnight  Oct 31 and voting ends one week later.  That way the challenges would continue to fall on even dates. For me it would be an easier deadline to remember.

About a week after you announced your theme Renderosity announced the Halloween contest would theme opening next week would be "Dinner with the Dead". This could also be taken as a feast. We seem to have a lot of new people entering. I'd like to point out that the rules for the halloween contest will most likely state it has to be a new image and cannot be posted in any other site, in our forums, other contests, or galleries prior to judging.

Firstly - Death, I don't know how you feel about a member using their Halloween entry for this contest. I don't plan on it but some may. Can you give us a ruling before people start?

Second - The way the Halloween rules work you can do anything with the Halloween entry after judging and winners are announced. If you post an entry or WIPs here before that date you could disqualify yourself in the Halloween contest.

Good points electroglyph. I wonder if we ought to just change the theme to avoid confusion all-together. If so, let's post suggestions (and maybe in a new tread to further avoid confusion) ASAP then before anyone gets a lot of work done in their entery.

We could alter the theme slightly to stress more narrowly a Thanksgiving theme. I didn't want to do that, wanted it to be more broad, but with the RD holloween theme interfering....

If anyone has ideas for a new or a way to modify the existing theme, please post them ASAP.

Well if ideas are needed I can bring out at least one:) If I would have won the previous and thus get a chance to decide I would have suggested something like "thousand caves"... something undergroundish. I don't know if there's been such a theme or not and I haven't think this any further if it's interesting or not:)

Bah.. the one time i get a good idea - I've already started my 'Feast' image!!!!! That said, its tenuous at best, and could be just as tenuous with other themes I guess : )

@Riquelme8: I was thinking today of an underground theme too. Trying to come up with something alternative to the feast.
@Alexclark: I know, I don't like how a wrench has been tossed into the machinery on this.

Today I took some time to brainstorm. i flipped through the latest 3D World magazine, and considered some previous themes and previous topics. I would like to keep the Feast theme alive in some way, because it is really unfair to change a week or two after it's been chosen. So I'm thinking a tweak to the food idea. We could try "Holiday Feast".

An alternative theme I had thought of before settling with the feast was something to do with a cafe setting. "The Cafe" would've been that theme. Coffee shop, outdoor cafe, midnight diner, etc. Looking at 3D World, it seems the 1st place winner of the Maxwell challenge they had was an outdoor cafe setting. We could try that and still keep it food oriented.

An underground theme I also had considered but backed down from it because it was a theme challenge a few months ago in the Vue forum. But I am open to that, though.

Now comes my next question. How do you all feel about changing the theme? Is it really an issue to worry about? We could tweak it to be more holiday-ish and yet still be food. The original date being close to Thanksgiving (US) was to help keep the food theme in ppl's minds. Maybe it's a good thing the date was so far into November, instead of Oct 31.

Feedback please. I hope to check the forum this Monday or Tuesday (US CST). Hopefully we can settle this problem by this Wednesday. Ignore the issue? change the theme? Tweak the Feast theme?

I'm beginning to like "The Cafe". What you do all think of that one?

alexclark ( ) posted Wed, 26 September 2007 at 2:47 PM

'The Cafe' works for me - gives me ideas anyway.

I'm not a Bryce artist but I think you should stick to your original idea - the feast. And it can be holiday-ish because it's still food anyway.

I agree with on_a_nice_day. There will always be other contests going on. Don't get wishywashy.

And it would be nice if a MOD could make this thread into a sticky post. :)

I've been having major Bryce problems. And haven't been keeping up to date on all that is going on around here. So I hope I'm not coming too late to this debate.

But why not just have a food theme? That way if anyone has started their feast they can keep it. That is unless their feast is something other then food?

Oh! If it's already been settled. Well someone please point me to the right post so I can get to work on something.
