Subject: WIP-01 - Dan Dare era city scene

As i've been enjoying modelling some 'classic' Hampson Era style designs- (Gallery postings), i thought i'd make one of those Big scene city views that used to grace the Front page of the Eagle comic in the 50's. As always i've begun with my faithful post-it note thumbnail sketch. Then as i had half an hour left of my lunch break i modelled some craft for the background. More to follow.

Now i've started working on the city background, all new modelling, i must be MAd, maybe i should save a city one day to use again.

Very cool models! I like the nostalgic retro-future Dan Dare style. I'm looking forward to your city scene as this is one of my favorite things to model as well.

I use to do pre-conceptual work for lawyers in new pre-built buildings in construction to which I grew to have a slight disproval for. But this is excellent geographic pre-conceptual work. I love you’re illustration of the sequence of study and does give us all a sense of your workflow. Thank you!

Isn’t it just fabulous! rjoo1 you have to give us the details. Hopefully a step by step of this fantastic production. I understand you not wanting to give away a secret method but this is just a fantastic piece of work from an honored member and I can just hope that you will give us an inkling of the procedure. Is the original layout from an actual birdseye photograph taken from the Internet? Has it been totally assembled in Bryce? Come on…give us a clue! LOL…I just love it! Keep up the great work!

I really like the ship on top in your first post. That and the city would be easily adaptable to my Travelleresque millieu. Actually quite well since I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I want starships to look like.

I think its just a matter of doing? I've made pretty complex bryce stuff many times, bryce never seemed to care much about it? I never need huge amounts of RAM or such either, 512mb served me well most of the time to be honest. I guess its just a mental barrier.

i use a lot of simple building blocks and let the textures do the work, also some old theatrical tricks like mirrors are very useful for increaing the depth of a model. though sometimes it do go belly up. just save often. although there are times i really wish i didnt do the tricky ones.

Mirrors are made by modelling them. with a cube for instance. Then you give it a texture that does absolutely nothing except being 100% reflective. and voila presto! ur mirror ;-)

Not to be confused with the mirror tool found in polygonal modelers (does wings have one?)

Its in the metal textures Fran, a tip is to turn off shadows and turn down the ambience, that way it doesnt glow, and belnds into the scene better

Oh I've used reflective materials before but even the mirror one didn't look quite right.

Okay had a play - looks best if all you've said is done, i.e. turn off shadows (cast and receive) ambience to 0, reflective up to 100 all else off or set to 0.

BUT! set difuse to black too. (everything else to white.)
