Subject: Stumped regarding instances

ajtooley ( ) posted Mon, 22 October 2007 at 7:11 PM · edited Sat, 11 January 2025 at 4:09 PM

I've got an image in mind that would use a large number of Poser figures in similar poses (okay, they're sitting). Anyway, in order to make placement a little easier, I'd like to use instances to vary clothing color, but I'll be  dad-blamed if I can figure out just how to do that. I'm using Vue 6 Pro Studio; are instances an Infinite-only kind of thing?

Thanks!

I may be wrong but I don't believe it's possible to vary the specific colour of an item using instances..at least not those imported from Poser. Also unless you convert the .pz3 to a .vob you would run ut of memory pretty fast because Poser figures - esp. clothed and wigged ones...are memory hogs when duplicated!

Check out:
Varying Materials on EcoSystem Populations

in the manual (page 492)

Even though you don't have an EcoSystem, this same technique will work for you.

PS-- Not sure if this is an Infinite ONLY setting.

Chipp, my manual appears to end on page 475! In any case, I searched for "varying" and "variable" within the text, and came up with some interesting ideas, but none that would seem to do what I'm trying. At least as far as I can tell, anyway; I'm no chimp, but I do have a problem with processing manual-speak into real-world results.

What I'm going for, in the end, is a group of seated theatre patrons. I'm trying to vary the color of their shirts so they don't look like clones. I could go Jackie's route and save a variety of figures as .vobs and just place those randomly in the seats, but I was wondering if there's a function-related way of doing it.

Thanks for replying!

My manual does go to page 587 but on page 492 it's Building a complete scene and Shaping out the forest.

Seems the manuals differ greatly.   Mine is from the 'convenience pack' as my 6Inf was the download version.

Hmmm. Sorry about the manual stuff. Mine is from Vue 6-Infinite's manual. In anycase, you may want to check out the horses on this page:

Thanks! I've only had a chance to glance at it, but the bit about the horses does seem to be what I'm looking for!

The Object Center node is the key. With it you can randomly change the color of a material based upon where it's located in the world. If you reread that page carefully, you'll see what I mean.

I'm not sure if Object Center node is available anywhere but Infinite.
