Subject: is it possible to emboss a picture under a picture?

ninhalo5 ( ) posted Sun, 28 October 2007 at 12:00 AM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 1:48 AM

Hi all, what I am trying to do is have a picture wrap it self around another picture..kinda

For example say I have a picture of a car of somesort and another picture of an apple what I want to do is emboss the apple to the car. that way the car picture is the same but now there is a transparent outline of an apple in the picture.
It's kinda hard to explain.   maybe think of it as a real photo and I press a apple shaped cookie cutter into the backside of the photo the apple shows through and the photo has the apple shape pressed into it.

any idea's on how to do something like this?
btw I'm using cs2

thanks

ninhalo5,

Before I go into an explanation is this the effect you are after?
You will have to click on the picture to enlarge it to see the effect beacuse the apple shape is transparent.  There are two different apples in the car door.

ninhalo5,

Here are a sequence of screenshots explaining what I did.  If you need clarification on any stage let me know.  Click on any of the pictures to see a larger version.

Thanks Shane, for taking the time to help me with this. I'm still having problems though. I followed your steps and the picture added seems to come out b/w  and still more or less sitting on top of the image. when I adjust the sliders the color of the "apple" changes back to red.
let me make sure I didn't miss any thing
1.open car pic,

  1. open apple pic,
  2. make a copy of the apple pic transparent background,
  3. drag apple copy unto car pic,
  4. create new adj layer /channel mixer
  5. create clipping mask
7.make sure channel mixer is set to monochrome
8.switch to apple layer and select overlay as the blend
  6. play with the slides in the mixer.

best I can get it is to turn the constant slider all the up. but that gives it a different effect.
when I bring the apple over it never gets that silver looking effect  (your 3rd Pic) I think that is where I ran into my problem.

Jeff,

In picture three the apple is red to start with (as can be seen in the layer history) but turns "silver" when the monochrome box is checked in the channel mixer.  When this box is checked the output channel field should show "gray" (top of the channel mixer window).  There should be no b/w effect at all on the car picture if the clipping mask has been applied to the apple layer.  Also the apple shouldn't change back to red whilst the monochrome box is checked and the output channel field displays gray.  If you uncheck the monochrome box the apple still stays silver but RGB values can be reintroduced bringing flat colour back to the apple.  With the apple image in grayscale the overlay blending mode turns the white areas transparent.  Using the channel mixer sliders simply adjusts the balance of the gray scale transitions.

If you are still having problems upload your source pictures and I'll have a look or a screen shot showing your layer history.

Shane.

ok here is a screen shot of what I have.... What I'm trying to do is I guess create a watermark type of thing. I made a quick logo  which represents the apple. the original colour is a reddish. if I turn the constent slider down it goes back to the original colour. the way it is set up  in the screen shot if I hide the other layers then my logo is a silver-grey colour but will either turn red, black or the way it looks now kinda translucent.  I'm bewildered 😕

Now that I know that you want to make a watermark I would do things differently - and simpler.
  1. Create your watermark logo in a single colour (like black).  Does not mater if it is text, painted, or a shape from a path so long as it is on its own layer and a single colour.
  2. Goto Filter>Stylize>Emboss.
  3. Adjust the sliders for the effect you want.
  4. Change the blending mode of your watermark layer to Soft Light.

excellent, this is excatly what I'm trying to figure out took me a week to think of "watermark" haha

well thank you  Shane for taking the time to show me this.
I'm curious what is the difference between the 2 things you showed me?
couldn't the apple be setup the same way like the watermark with the same effect?
it seems to give the same or close apperence although the watermark is much simpler.

thanks again
Jeff
