Subject: Malware on Renderosity?

esha ( ) posted Fri, 09 November 2007 at 2:09 PM · edited Sat, 04 January 2025 at 2:39 PM

I have Spybot running in the background.
Several times now I got the message that it had blocked the download of  "/DoubleClick". That happened in the forums as well as in the market place.
I think that a professional site such as this one should be free of things like that (and in fact it has been for a long time). Maybe somebody is abusing Renderosity for their shady aims? Or is my spybot lying?
Perhaps somebody from the team could clarify what's the matter here ;)

I don't keep spybot running but I do an update and scan every week.  It doesn't find anything like doubleclick (which I hate hate hate) but my firewall won't allow anything to download to my PC unless I give permission.
I've noticed that sometimes outside banner ads will try to put those things on a PC..ads that go to some other site especially if you have clicked on one.

Doubleclick used to have a thing on their site that you could get from them that would  block them from ever putting a cookie on your computer. They had to do it because they were breaking the law by doing their spying in a secret manner.  Too bad it isn't advertised more.

try blocking sigfiles and see if "doubleclick" still gets caught trying to infect yer computer.

I run SpyBot and AdAware at least once a week, and neither of them have caught DoubleClick for ages. (DoubleClick itself isn't that bad, it just tracks surfing habits for marketing clients. It's just irritating.) As a matter of fact, I was just testing out a new link scanner, and picked Renderosity to scan, and it came out squeaky clean. (LinkScanner Pro)

it won't be coming from Rendo directly... it'll will be in the Ad's that run along the top banner that carry it, so it will be random.

DblClick not only tracks you with cookies they also track you with your IP number..so keeping the cookies off is only part of it.
Anyone can do a search and find out how the company started..the trouble they've been in and the changes they have had to make.  The latest thing is being bought by Google and its being protested by some pretty major companies.

BTW.. It's a pain until you get used to it..but your browser lets you be the final judge of the cookies allowed on your HD.
I keep mine set to always accecpt session cookies and never allow 3rd party cookies and on every page I go to I can allow a cookie from them or not..and I can choose to always allow a cookie from a certain place (like here) or I can permanently block a cookie from any site I don't trust and they can't put it on my PC after that.
Its all in your internet settings on your browser.
(afterthought)
At any given time I only have between 10 and 15 cookies on my machine. I keep a check and take off anything I don't want on a regular basis.

Ah! I didn't know that it could come with the ads.
I know I can block the downloads and the cookies and so on, I was just wondering why suddenly the thing appeared here.
Thanks to you all! :)
