I'm not sure if I've ever gotten the error when I did not have a DS import - I don't think so. But I have used the import successfully from time to time and been able to save. I installed the DS 1.8 update a while back and did not have any problems with that. The "out of memory" error occurred before that update, too. I have 152 GB free space on my drive and 2 GB RAM on an AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual.
This is about the 3rd or 4th big scene I've lost in the last half year or so. Bryce is starting to be not so much fun anymore!
I'm afraid something in your render is probably using all the memory..find what it is and either retexture or remove it..Usually I find it's hair or anything particularly glossy or reflective.Sometimes just moving an item around can sort it.It can certainly cut render times.
I find I do have a limit for figures..more than three and Bryce gets quite unhappy.
I do think though that the last update has made more issues for me than it sorted...It just keeps going nah not rendering that and I then get the usual Bryce has an issue and will now close error message. I too have a new( 3 months) machine that was doing fine with the last version of Bryce 6.
Well, I just deleted the last figure that I had added and just like that the entire scene disappeared and Bryce froze up! The figures that were high poly were the man and woman in front, the 2 horses (I think so anyway -- they are the DAZ milhorse) and the lady in the background. The other background men were low poly guys. Anyway, I had the image saved, and an earlier version saved , so all is not lost. Not sure if I will work on it again, though, as I might have the same issue again if I can't figure out what's causing it. I shrank up some of the texture files before I tried to save - should have done that to more of them maybe. Maybe I should just leave those Poser figures out from now on!
Death at Midnight suggested the swap file being too small. I don't even remember how to change that, as I haven't had any memory issues besides this one since I upgraded to XP in 2002.
Out of memory is pretty clear a message: your system ran out of memory.
Like someone else mentioned: after exhausting physical memory it will try to get more swap space (virtual memory). You should set that to the max (close to 3 GB I think). So, just having more physical memory doesn't mean you have enough virtual memory.
Did you ever render or load that one scene?
Is the graphics card or driver different? Perhaps there's a memory leak in this driver.
Is it the same version of Bryce?
You may also want to avoid aving too many other crapwares preloaded - they call it quicklaunch but it's really slowing everything down by stealing memory and resources. Don't pre-load Quicktime, iTunes, RealPlayer, AIM, Skype, YIM, ICQ,... anything, period, and all these others which show up on the task tray (mini-icons next to the clock). About the only thing you should have there is the clock, and anti-virus and the speakers volume controls.
Talking about anti-virus, don't use Norton, Symantec, McAfee, AVG, Panda, CA, Kaspersky,... they're all memory hogs and need 4-10 processes. If it takes longer than 18 seconds to boot your system you know that's the culprit. Use Eset NOD32.

no problem. By-theway, use ControlAlt-Delet or right-click the taskbar to open the Task Manager, there are several places in there that will show you how much memory you still have free or how much is committed (i.e. virtual)
How much RAM does that new system have anyway, are we talking 2 GB or more? Notice that 32-bit Windows can only address 2 GB per process, 3 GB if the proggy was compiled with /largememory flags (like Dogwaffle is since v4.0b). If you have a 64-bit version of Windows it can run 32-bit applications up to 4 GB.
Nice screenshot, by-the-way - tell us, is that an OpenGL 3D view? Does it run into that problem in other modes too? (like without shading)
I've got 2 GB RAM. I figured out where to change the swap file size. It had 2000+MB initial size to 4092 MB max size allocated, with a recommendation of 3069 initial size. What initial and max sizes do you recommend? I've got Windows XP - is that 32 bit or 64 bit?
I never imagined that this newer computer would not have appropriate virtual memory settings already in place.
The screen shot was a render. Bryce rendered the scene, but wouldn't save it.
Everything Staigermanus mentions is what I would recommend.
Just to give you an idea.
A Clean Windows XP Machine install should only display 16 Tasks running inside task manager.
The machine I'm typing on, is runningn NOD32 and I have a total of 20 Tasks running.
When installing software, when possible I choose custom and I make sure I understand what it is going to install on my machine before I go ahead and click ok.
Memory and CPU Resources can easily be lost with just a few installed programs. Whenever possible. Disable the following.
Checking for Updates other than my VirusScanner, I dont need Adobe Photoshop or My PDF Reader to check for updates. I normaly check for updates manualy if I think there is a need too.
Disable start when windows starts when possible. I prefer Trillian over MSN Messenger, but yet I dont allow it to run on startup... if I feel that I need to CHAT with someone, than I will start the program otherwise I dont need to have it sit in my tray while I want to do graphics work.
Any sort of Quick Launch - some software like Microsoft Office will load these Loaders that are supposed to help load their software faster when you need to launch them like Word or Excel.. the time savings with these loaders is marginal and you dont need them. I can wait an extra 5 seconds to load Excel or Word.
I'm amazed at some of the machines that I come across that need optimizing and have 50-60+ Tasks running.
Some Common Resource Hogs, that are un-necessary.
you want RealPlayer and Quick Time?? Google for "Real Alternative" and "QuickTime Alternative" both use Classic Media Player as a warpper and do an excellent job replacing the original bloated software.
You will notice to ATIXXX tasks running if you have installed the Catalyst... these tasks poll you're PC looking for special Keyboard Shortcuts pressed for Special ATI Commands...which I dont know what they are dont care about. You need to disable these from the "Services Menu"
I can go on and on with this... :) But you get the idea.

32 by default although I think you can find XP for 64bit too. But you'd know if that's what you have, it's sort of special order.

oh wow that's strange.
Is the render at the resolution you see onscreen or is it larger resolution? You can always save the image from Clipboard.
I was able to save the image, but not the Bryce file. The image was larger than what I posted above - it was 900 x 675 --- it probably needed more tweaking, but I guess at this point I'm thinking it's a final render!
Thanks for the list of stinkers, Analog-X. I don't think I have too many of them running, but going to check it out now.
2 quick notes.
Depending on certain jpg textures that are loading as you add more and more items, this eats up tons of mem. in a file. (How big is your Bryce file before rendering?)
When using regular Render mode in Bryce, the GUI is constantly updating. On large/complex files, I always "render to disk". Later I do the same while making seperate alpha mask renders for each item in the scene for postwork purposes. While building the scene, I render the scene normally in a small frame res, 1024x768 or smaller, and test changes with plop renders.
When I'm content with the comp, I render to disk at 5 to 6 times the scale and sometimes increase the resolution up to print quality.

I got this answer in DAZ's Bryce forum from member Horo:
"The Out of Memory is a result of the way Bryce manages memory. If the physical memory is exhausted, it ought to swap over to virtual memory on the hard disk (the pagefile), but it does not do so.
The problem usually appears after you made a lot of changes to your scene and the undo-buffer gets filled up. There is no other way to clear this buffer than saving your work often, quit Bryce, restart it and load your project. If it gets elaborate, do this often. It's tedious, but it is a workaround.
If you get an out of memory because you loaded a huge HDRI, you can continue working on your scene but you cannot save it anymore. But you can render and save the resulting picture. In such a case, use a smaller HDRI until you are happy with everything, save, load the huge HDRI, render and save the picture. You still have the source file with the smaller HDRI if you need to make some changes."
Good Bryce info; I'd never heard about this issue before. With all of your help, I should have less problems in the future.
It should imprinted at birth for us to SAVE often and SAVE AS #?.br? when making lots of or complex changes. If I'm about to do something major I always ensure that I'm in a position to revert before proceeding.
Something that came up with my current project that I found intriguing. Bryce actually stalled and went into 'not responding' (it crashed!) when I tried to change a colour/texture I had created on some objects. By changing the texture to one already installed I solved the problem, but it was very disturbing.
You might check next time this happens, if you have another incidence of Bryce running. Check the TASK MANAGER to see.

You don't get this problem with earlier versions, I have checked this by taking a scene which has crashed in B6 opening it in B5 and then quite easily added a heap more figures, models and volumetric mats without any crashes. I think this is a programing issue as it has only appeared since the arrival of B6. In my opinion Daz would be better to focus on making 6 more stable than adding anything more such as has been suggested in other threads. Another thing I'm not keen on is making Bryce so dependent on Daz Studio,even tho I use both,I prefer programs to be Stand alone so that I have control over what gets installed on my system.
Anyway thats my little gripe for the day.

Is that true, you have to instal DAZstudio before installing Bryce6.1? Or at least have it installed by the time you use Bryce? I seriously doubt that, but if they did make that a requirement it'd be rather disappointing. Nothing wrong with DAZstudio, in fact it's pretty neat and stuff, but it'd be wrong to make it a requirement. Just like it'd would be wrong for Apple to require iTunes be installed along with Quicktime. yes you can make that the default but you still expect it to be an option you can do without.
